Re: T61p exhibiting 1 long and 2 short beep and black screen

Wait... Your laptop lasted 5 years, 10 months and you are complaining about quality?  Jeez.  Go buy a Dell, HP, or Toshiba and then talk to me about build quality.  My girlfriend has a business class HP from work.  She has frequently required repairs.  I had a business class Dell for work.  Despite being at least 4 years newer than my T61p, it was *slower*.

I appreciate that the cost of a T61p type laptop exceeds a crappy consumer laptop and thus it needs to last longer but 5 years is a long time for a laptop.

Good luck with replacement shopping.  Me, I'll keep eyeing that W series...

FYI: Not affaliated with Lenovo and my T61p died this summer after ~6 years.  Loved it, miss it, even the T61 I got used for cheap isn't the same quality of look and feel.  Mine traveled extensively with me and took that abuse like a champ.

Having read a significant part of the thread, I'll say that it is not likely to be your memory modules. It is almost certainly your NVIDIA GPU based on the information here. That's what my recent T61p death (1L, 2S beeps) seems to have been. You can find replacement Intel GPU motherboards. Try member Tuus for supplies or look on ebay for a complete unit. I found a T61 on craigslist for cheap. Fair warning: if you are used to the build quality on the T61p, the T61 is not quite as nice.

Re: T61p exhibiting 1 long and 2 short beep and black screen

My T61p sat in a dock on a desk, never travelled and was infrequently used. I would have been lucky to use it more - then per chance it might have died while still under warranty.

I have owned 5 different thinkpads (T42, T43, T61p, T400, T430s). I still own the latter 3.

Now 2 out of 5 have encountered fatal MOBO problems that are reported to be widespread (besides the T61p, the other was the T42 which had a MOBO flex issue).

So, the MOBOs on 40% of my Thinkpads have turned out to be ticking time bombs. That does not bode well. Basically I expect them all to die, most likely sometime after year 3. So I should be sure to sell them by the 3 year mark. Time to start advertising the T400.

I love Thinkpads and think they are the most appealing, best looking, most utllitarian laptops for business by far. But the reliability track record here is not good. And yes since my old laptops end up just sitting on a desk w/ infrequent use, I have no reason not to expect them to last 10+ years.

The T4x series wasn't a fatal flaw, it was just the solder connections. It could be fixed by reballing the gpu chip with leaded solder balls, or some people would reflow the existing solder, which wasn't really a perm fix, but required less equipment and skill to preform. The nVidia issue is different because it's the actual chip that's failed.

Mine all work great except for one T61p built during the transition month of July 2008 which  failed after 2 years of heavy use due to the Nvidia Issue in 2010 (exclusively used on a docking station with external KB, Monitor and Mouse ) while still on Lenovo Onsite warranty.   I now regret selling that unit to help another T61p user who's Nivida chip failed and she simply swapped in her original HDD and was back up and running in a couple of minutes as if nothing happened. I watched the Lenovo tech in my home install a new mainboard where the date code "on the Nvidia chip" was from 2010 so I knew I had a good Nvidia unit and the Keyboard, internal monitor, and external casing were still like new.  It's all about knowing any used unit's chain of custody if you go that route.

My T42 has traveled around the world a dozen times or more before I retired as a Petroleum Engineer and it had the stuffings beat out of it in all kinds of harsh conditons both offshore and onshore and it still feels and runs as good as when the company gave it to me (and then let me keep it after retiring).  I did my best to treat it well and it still continues to reward me ..... one person's view of abuse is another's view of torture and I've seen young adults today treat their electronic gadgets as if they were toys made to be stopped upon .... probably due to the meth epidemic sweeping the world these days.

Simply go back a bit to post 1454 to find all the enlightenment which you seek.

Several options will be revealed and you will have decisions to make once the light of knowledge shines brightly upon you after only a few minutes of skimming through posted replies to the many others who have come before you with the same question.

Also check this link out:

Should you decide on the easy 5-minute fix route per the postings, please note that your T61's HDD can be placed in a T61p and it will boot nicely into your current operating system because the T61 and T61p use the same video driver package.   After running Lenovo System update, you'll have just have completed an upgraded to a T61p with much faster 3D graphics and probably a faster CPU.

Well eecon, I think your math on the failure rate is a bit off...

You assume 10% of broken systems get reported. Yeah right...

All those that are owned by a business won't get reported on here; no system admin is gonna make an account to whine about broken systems on the "Lenovo community". Those that are owned privately might be reported; but not 10% by a long shot. Most people just want a solution and few will take the time to add their identical complaint to a long list.

Personally my 07/05 T61 was fixed on Lenovo's dime in August 2011, some 14 months past warranty. So far the n=1 talk. Kudo's for Lenovo for fixing a broken product that they should have recalled in the first place, but also for the new trackpoint cap they placed in the repair centre.

Now last saturday morning I open up my laptop and power it on (resume from S3 sleep) and I get a black screen. So after closing and opening I press the power button for a few sec and it powered on again. And now I have something I haven't heard before: 1 long and 2 short beeps. I even ripped the broken Ultrabay battery out, but that didn't change anything.

So apparently Lenovo "fixed" these systems under warranty with another broken nVidia card. Ain't that just great?

According to your logic I was in the 1%. Now since saturday I'm in the 0.01%

I'm not buying into that.

What I might be buying instead is a mainboard with the Intel onboard video. For just 29 euro's + shipping that seems to be a good deal.

I found this topic after a T61 developed a corrupted display (vertical lines and a mangled screen). Not quite the manifestations of the problem described here but after investigating also caused by the nVidea GPU going bad. Fortunately TuuS was able to sell a Intel graphics-based  motherboard that has solved the problem. Took about an hours worth of work to replace the board, but well worth it to have the computer running again for a fraction of the cost of a new (and in my opinion lesser quality) Thinkpad. Thank you TuuS!
