Re: T61p exhibiting 1 long and 2 short beep and black screen

2014-04-13, 19:43 PM

I have the exact same problem with a ThinkPad T61 (TYPE 6457-6PG)

I am wondering if I can bypass this problem by connecting the laptop on the docking station.

I think my docking station is the 2504 but I have to find first where I stored it :D

Anyone tried this?

No, if you have a total GPU failure it won't boot with or without a dock. Some people have claimed that it works with a partial gpu failure when using the fullsize 2503 dock with an external GPU card installed in the dock, however this requires a partially working GPU in the laptop and could stop working at any moment that the gpu finally fails completely.

Thanks for your answer!

So now, the only way to fix this pc is to change motherboard?

Can you recomment anything with intel graphics?

I have checked ebay but I don't think the "checked" ones are really checked and in working contition.

Thanks again!

I agree regarding ebay, I've learned the hard way that the only reliable way to source one of these boards is from a working laptop. If you'd like my help sourcing one you're welcome to send me a private message, I'll need your model, serial and date code and the model of CPU chip (if known). Please do not post this info in the public forum, or if you have access to a quantity of liquidated laptops I can tell you what to look for to find a suitable and reliable replacement.

My (my father's actually) T61 is with 15.4 inch screen with a finger print scanner. I found out that they are also T61 with a 14 inch screen, so I have to check for other codes under the laptop.

I may have limited access to a quantity of liquidated laptops since I know the IT manager in the company my father was working before he retired. BTW, this was his business laptop and got it with him when he lefts the company.

These models came in three sizes, 14.1" standard screen, 14.1" widescreen, and 15.4" widescreen.

When you get back to me with the numbers from your unit I'll check what is available here and let you know what to look for in the liquidated laptops to find a reliable board,

I found a solution to the black screen and beeping problem. Took the heat sink off of the nvidia chip, cleaned up the heat conducting paste, then heated up the chip with a heat gun for about three minutes. One can put aluminium foil around the chip to protect adjacent parts. Used fresh heat conducting paste and put the heat sink back on. Works fine.

This is nothing new and it's not a solution. You've heated up and expanded the chip so that the fractured circuits make contact. It wil stop working again, in a day, week, or if you're really lucky it may last a month.

Re: T61p exhibiting 1 long and 2 short beep and black screen

Hey all,

I had a friend that had this same issue a year ago, build date 08/08. He received his T61p at the same time I got mine.

Today I went to power on my T61p, which had been asleep. I pressed the power button and it sat there and nothing came on screen. I decided to reboot by using the power button. When I tried to do this, I got a blank screen and, you guessed it, 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps.

I tried reseating the RAM, all combinations of both modules, and I tried hooking up an external monitor. None of that worked.

I think I'm just going to declare it dead. It gave me 5 years and 10 months of good service, used throughout college and after (although one of those years it was scarcely used). The original battery was dead after 3 years.

I just came here to post because it seems people think that a build date of August 2008 means that this issue won't happen to you, but I have just presented two cases, and I bet if I surveyed my college class (~1200 and everyone got the same one and probably a similar build date) I'd find that many people had the same issue with the same build date. But none of that matters, most are probably not in use today. A lot of people actually just killed their laptops for a warranty replacement before graduation.

Anyone have a recommendation for a replacement?

I was hoping to make it to Broadwell release...
