Re: T61p exhibiting 1 long and 2 short beep and black screen

2014-08-02, 0:15 AM

If your laptops production date is before 08/08 you can take some steps to prolong it's life by making sure the cooling system is operating properly and clean and avoid unnecessary heat cycling by disabling standby and suspend/hibernate as well as avoiding turning it on/off when not necessary.

I'd also like to sound a not of caution to anyone just buying one of these. There are some unscrupulous repair techniques used on these and if you buy one that dies or starts showing symptoms within days or weeks it may have previously failed. When sourcing a good nVidia board I always do a min of seven days of testing which includes gpu stress test while temps are monitored.

If you got one that never failed it may last for years to come, or it could fail. Yours has the nvs140m graphic system which seems to be less likely to fail than the fx570m in this thread, but also has the same problem. This model tends to fail slowly and may show symptoms like video driver crashes or graphic artifacts rather than a hard failure with the 3beep code.

Generally the closer to the august 2008 date your laptop was made the better off you could be, but any manufactured in August rarely fail if they still have the original motherboard.

TuuS, thanks for that info.  This one is Oct 07.  I have pulled the keypad and palm rest off and it was completely clean inside, kind of shocking clean actually.  The seller told me he just reimages and resells, so the thing was taken care of by someone for many years.

I thought the Lenovo site used to give repair info via serial number plugin but all I get is the expired warranty info.  I wonder if lenovo is honoring these post warranty for a motherboard replacement, hmmmm.

Anyway, I'll use it :smileyhappy: and hope it lasts a while, I'm an X60 guy so this  "gigantic" 14 inch monster is pleasing to these eyes:smileyvery-happy:.

Your production date puts you at the peak of the failures, but since it's so clean it may not have been used much. I think you could get many years out of it as long as you keep the gpu hot or cold, the transfer from cold to hot and back is what causes the stress and eventual failure.

Regarding post-warranty repairs, you over 3 years late for that party. It was a program that ran from march 1st 2010 till march 31st 2011. If it does fail your options are an 08/08 board which I can sometimes get, another of the same board you have now, or one with Intel graphics. The 14" widescreen is the least costly of the three sizes to repair so you'd be fortunate there.

Excellent advice right here, and the one that I subscribe to myself.

Then again, while we haven't seen Mike around here for quite a while, those of us who know who he *really* is have no doubt that he'll treat the machine well and get the most out of it...:smileywink:

Would the Intel GMA X3100 GM965 with 1394  - #41W1487 fit in my 7664-05u? Or fit with some "minor" modification.

Yes, the 41w1487 (merom only) or the 42w7866 (merom or penryn) will work in your model with a minor fan modification.

These are only for 14" widescreen models and will not fit 14" standard or 15.4" widescreen.

While it would work, my suggestion would be to stay with your current nVidia board for as long as it doesn't give you any grief...

Cheers,

George

Tuus, thanks for the info:smileyhappy:

I agree 100% with Tuus. If you keep your GPU away from high temperature, it could last years or even forever. It's my personal experience. I have had a T61p from nov 2007 working perfectly till January 2014 when I suddenly let my son play a game on it (minecraft). Before the game, my use was office work and watching videos (that does require GPU work it seems, from the temps). However the game got GPU hot and within a few weeks bang the beeps.

Re: T61p exhibiting 1 long and 2 short beep and black screen

Hello,

First I know, this is "good old (sad & bad)" topic, but I have question, can´t find answer anywhere.

I think many of us already know, that machines built after 08/08 (AFTER august of 2008) shouldn´t be affected with GPU failture.

Source: http://t61.wikispaces.com/

I really spent a lot of time with learning about this topic, but there are still questions about it.

So:

nVidia GPU failture is only problem of GPU chip itself, or it is problem of whole motherboard_?

Because I have T61p with symptoms of this issue (nVidia driver stopped working bla bla bla...), it is not often, but once it can come to me (built date 08/04)

So I want know if I have to find whole new motherboard (FRU 44C3931) or if I (not personally - i know professional reballing company) can exchange only GPU chip for newer version (G84-950-A2).

Somewhere I read, that there is problem of GPU chips.

Somewhere I read, that there is problem on motherboards too (something with unstable voltages etc.)

Somewhere I read, that all (without exception) G84 and G86 chips are bad and sentenced to extinction.

So I have no idea where is the truth xD

I know T61p is old etc., but I believe in his potential  and I really love it :)

(W520 is still very expensive for me and maybe I have some.....prejudices of it)

In advance thank you for your knowledge and advices :)

Peter Maslik
