Re: T61p exhibiting 1 long and 2 short beep and black screen

2014-08-14, 1:37 AM

The problem is the GPU chip itself, but it's not as simple as just having a shop with reballing equipment replace the chip, the problem is that they don't make these chips anymore and nVidia only makes them in small quantites when required to do so by oem contracts which are now all mostly obsolete. If you buy a chip today the odds are you're getting a chip that has had the dates altered to make it appear new when it's not.

Here is a story recently published about a shop that received one of these fake chips...

http://uken.tv/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=100:watch-out-for-fake-new-bga-chips&catid=58:tips-and-articles&Itemid=75&lang=en

You can read more by doing a google search on the terms "fake chips" and "china".

To properly fix this you'll need a board from August 2008 or one with Intel graphics.

I concur, with one small addition: if you keep your machine away from thermal cycling, a board from April of 2008 may just last forever.

And if it fails, you could look into replacement options. I wouldn't be worried to much in advance, but would most certainly be careful and keep temps under control.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

I'll add an aditional note of caution to George's post. If you're going to source a board from prior to August 2008, be careful you don't end up with one that has already failed and been baked/reflowed. You could end up with another failed board and may not know it until it's too late.

I removed heatshink  and heated graphics chips with hot air and replaced heat sink with new thermal paste and works. May work for a week or day but it works for moment.

Funny way I fixed my T61 triple beeper

2014-10-14, 14:33 PM

My T61 is started the old "one long two short beeps" thing and nothing comes up on the screen.

These forums say graphics card.

Funny but it is on, doesn't look like it and I stuck it in my laptop pack and
went home. Hours later, I pulled it out, it was warm, of course, and did th old "remove static" hold down start button.
Not sure that did anything but I put the laptop on the docking bay and it started up, go figure!

First time *fix* was by accident. A month later much to my chagrin the dreaded beeps happened. I closed the lid
and put the laptop in my packpack holder (it was well padded: read: insulated) and this morning, wala! it worked.

I'm really not sure that it heated up to terribly. But I am looking for a second used T61 that I can move all my good peripherals to.

The failure that caused the problem was cracks in the circuits within the gpu chip. When you heated it the materials expanded and caused the circuits to touch. This allowed it to boot but it's not really fixed and the circuits can overheat. If you get a replacement it might be wise to find one with Intel graphics. It's not likely you'll find one that will run your T9300 cpu but you can use a custom bios to deal with that issue, or if you can find one that has the 42w7872 motherboard you'll be good to go, but they are very rare.

I understand I might be taking a step down in processor power/speed.
I don't plan on changing anything over but the SDD , RAM, and software.
thanks!

I found a T61p 15.5" screen for $249. 2.4 ghz processor. Windows 7 which I don't need 4GB RAm which I don't need and 100GB hardrive which I don't need. Oh well, cheaper than a motherboard install.

And yes, I know what might have fixed it temporaritly except that it never seemed to have gotten hot enough to melt anythning and it was cold when it started up afterwards. Still running, that is how I am sending this.

Actually you can get a motherboard for less, but if you do get this t61p I'd be careful you don't get one that has had the same "fix" applied to it.

btw, yours is the standard screen model, they are less common and aren't often equipped with the T9300 processor. It's the last Tseries with the 4:3 aspect ratio, the first with penryn processor and ability to use 8gb of ram. Many of us feel they are the best of the thinkpads.

Yes well, I paid $268 to get T61p shipped from Tampa Labtops. I know the catches snafus and pitfalls, but I doubt I would be able to get anyone around here to sell and replace a motherboard for $268 much less $400.
Sometimes expertise has to be weighed with the biggger picture.

Tampa Laptops had very good reviews on Amazon. Of course, there are always 2 sides to everything. For $268 I'm moving on.
