Ha! I got the laptop post haste, looks really good. It fits on my docking bay already and I pulled changed the hardrives and it works with my SDD from my T61 with the problem. Didn't have to install anything except update the video drivers. Hard to believe. go T61's

My T61p that I heated GPU to fixed died again...

Guess it is time to move away from the old T61p and get kids some newer
laptops.

Well. Newer means money. Tampa Labtops might have something cheaper. Sheez my T61 was 9 years old before it went on the triple beep.

Heating the gpu is not a fix, it's just a waste of time imo

I didn't do it on purpose but it gave my T61 enough of a life to logon to this forum. . . .where I was able to find out how bad my situation was.

A proper fix would be a board from August 2008 (widescreen models only) or an Intel board, for the standard screens there are a few NOS (new old-stock) boards that recently surfaced that have the new gpu chips, but the general production of these models ended before august so none came equipped with the new gpu chips.

The NOS boards I could get for you, if you want to send me a PM I'll get you the info. I can sometimes also get the 08/08 boards and the intel boards too. These are better options than getting a typical replacement laptop since most have the same problematic gpu chips.

If you have a standard screen model with a penryn cpu chip that is a pretty rare laptop and would be well worth investing in an NOS board. This is the last of he 4:3 aspect ratio laptops, the first to support penryn cpu and the first to support 8gb ram, so they are considered the ultimate thinkpad by many. In my opinion the only thing that compares would be a 15" T60 with a T61 board (frankenpad)

I'll be returning from vacation thursday so if you want to send me a pm I'll reply when I return.

Re: T61p replacement motherboard

2014-11-14, 12:32 PM

Hello,

I purchase my T61p (8891-CTO) on August 2007. I can't recall on what kind of cpu chip it has. The GPU failed after one year of use. On 2010, I discovered this forum and Lenovo replaced my T61p motherboard, I believe in early 2011. After 4 months of use, the GPU failed again. Since then it's been dead collecting dust. I missed my T61p and it was my first Thinkpad. It was a great laptop. Currently, I have a T400.

I'm thinking of replacing the motherboard with an Intel graphics for my T61p. I wanted to confirmed if the 42w7872 would be the correct replacement. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

JC

Hi JC, yes the 42w7872 (supprts merom and penryn cpu) will work but the direct replacement intel board for your model would be the 42w7648 (supports merom cpu) which is more common.

Unfortunately your story is quite common because the supply of new replacement boards was quickly exhausted so lenovo had to use refurbished boards for warranty repairs and very few of them got net GPU chips because of the cost and supply of the chips being an issue. There was however some of these rare new boards uncovered from a corporation. It appears that IBM had given boards to some of their corporate customers to assure product loyality and when their fleet of T61 series was retired the unused boards were liquidated. I don't think you'd be likely to find them anywhere else at any price but I believe there are still a couple available and you can send me a PM if you'd like me to get you one. These are new in original ibm boxes with gpu dates of 2010, far beyond the mid 2008 date when the chips were redesigned.

I personally really love these 4:3 standard screen models, they are the last standard screen thinkpad laptops and the only one to support penryn cpu and upto 8gb of ram. Many consider this to be the ultimate thinkpad and many have retrofitted these boards into a 15" T60 so they can have the most powerful board in the last model to offer the 15" ips screens. I feel the 14" T61p and the T60/61 hybrid (frankenpad) are my two favorite thinkpads of all time.
