I am wondering if something like this could bypass the GPU on the mobo...

It might work but you'd need a working motherboard in order to use it, if your nVidia chip has failed and won't boot, then this would not be an option.

However, a far better solution to use an external graphics card would be using the full size advanced 2503 docking station which has a PCIe slot that many low profile cards will fit. Some people have rigged up bus expansion adapters to fit larger graphic cards outside the dock but that seems to be almost as silly as that video since if I wanted a gaming rig that bad I'd just build a desktop instead of having cards and wires all over my desk and the device used in that video would require either leaving your keyboard or bezel off to route the cable so you wouldn't have a mobile laptop anymore. At least with the dock you could remove the laptop in less than 10 seconds and leave the frankenstein setup behind on your desk.

Is there a cheaper intel based motherboard instead of 42W7651 for Merom?

My model is 6457-6pg

Sorry for the delay in responding, the forum was being updated and all the threads were locked but I did reply to you via PM.

There is one very cheap option (while they last). You can use a T60 board, it requires a different cpu, pc card assembly, cpu support plate and there are some limitations but the ones that are currently avaiable have the ATI discrete graphics and are new lenovo refurbished boards. These would be ideal if you're not concerned with having the highest specs and just want a working laptop, or you need reliable discrete graphics without spending a lot of money. I think there are three available and I was considering getting one myself. If this sounds like something you're interested in you can reply to my PM and we can discuss the benefits and limitations.

Tell me please can it be installed Thinkpad T60p 2007 14" Motherboard Board Bottom ATI FireGL FRU-42T0153

Part-42w3202 as replasenent for my motherboard
in T61p 8891-CTO 14 inch (4:3) FRU-42W7650 Part-42w3811
I mean the physical dimensions of the motheboard is the same ?
Attachment points are located in the same sequence ? And what about LCD cable that connects to motheboard.

This can be done, you'd need to modify the frame and leave out one screw mount, remove the dialup modem and you'd also need a T60 cpu, cpu support plate, pc card assembly.   Or if you have the whole T60 lower chassis you can install all your t61 parts on it.

This applies only to the 14" standard screen models, there are no 14" widescreen T60 models and the 15.4" widescreen boards can also be fitted with similar modifications and the 15" standard screen board is identical to the 14" standard T60 board.

Re: Funny way I fixed my T61 triple beeper

Got the same situation last week. My T61 was running all fine for 6 years. It is very solid.

But it suddently cannot boot, and got one long and two short beeps. It has a discrete nvidia nvs 140m graphic card. Based on the long thread here. It seems there is some bug in embeding it to the motherboard.

So how to fix it? I wish there can be a long term solution.

Thank you all.

Sparkx, I have helped many members source motherboards that aren't effected with this nVidia bug and if you'd like my help you can send me a PM. I'm also sorry I haven't replied sooner  but I haven't been receiving notifications for replies to this thread and I'm not sure why because I'm suscribed to receive them. I'll need your model, serial and date code from the bottom lable but please don't post this info in the public forum, send it in a private message instead if you'd like my help.

Are there any more good motherboards or T61's out there?

I just hit the 1 long 2 short beeps with my second T61. I have a good build I would like to keep running, but maybe it's time to throw away my docking station, extra batteries, and move on to another system.

I can give you the required information TuuS if you are still actively looking for new boards/pc's.

Thanks for your past help on this, your information was helpful. What a frustrating problem.

Hi TuuS,

I have the same problem with my T61p (6459-CTO, CPU T9300) with Nvidia GPU. It's just died yesterday with 1 long beep and 2 short beeps, black screen. Can you help me to check a replacement board for my laptop with Intel GPU?

I have sent a PM to you regarding the serial.

Thanks,
