T61p graphic card problem

2009-07-03, 6:20 AM

My laptop is T61p, 8891.

I'm referring to the Document ID: MIGR-69684(http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-69684), it says:

Symptom

Some ThinkPad T61, T61p, or R61 systems with Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M (NVIDIA NB8M-GS) or Quadro FX 570M (NVIDIA NB8P-GL) graphics and two memory DIMMs installed may intermittently report that the video adapter "has stopped responding, but has recovered", typically when doing graphics intensive processing such as a video benchmark or video game.

Affected configurations
The following systems running Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista may be affected:
  • Thinkpad T61, T61p (type 1959, 6377, 6457, 6458, 6459, 6460, 6461, 6462, 6470, 6481, 7662, 7663, 7664, 7665, 8889, 8890, 8891, 8892, 8893, 8894, 8939)
  • ThinkPad R61 (7742, 7743, 7744, 7751, 7753, 7754, 7755)
Solution

Contact the help center and reference tip MIGR-72482 to get your planar replaced.

Applicable countries and regions Worldwide

I have two questions here:

1, My laptop is out of warranty, can I still ask to replace the motherboard replaced for free, or I need to pay?

2, Actually I didn't encounter such problem as I seldom "doing graphics intensive processing" (the heaviest job with my graphic card is to play Rise of Nation and Need for Speed 11), do I still need to consider to replace the motherboard or the graphic card to avoid the risk?

Please please advise! Thank you!

Anybody who has a T61p and begins to experience a problem like this should contact IBM Serve quickly.  And, if your machine is still in warranty, you should extend your warranty immediately, too.

I began to experience intermittant lockups and 1 blue screen while playing videos, but I didn't do anything about it.  Finally, the display stopped working entirely.  As I do have a docking station with its own video card and an external display, I can still boot the system to Win XP, but the LCD remains blank (backlight on).

Unfortunately at IBM Serve, the guy or gal who answers the phone probably hasn't ever heard of this problem, and he'll offer you a repair for $575.  Don't do it!  Instead, try to get a no-charge repair by referring to tip MIGR-72482.  The problem lies in a faulty Nvidia chip.

I have the same issue with my T61 laptop, as per the customer rep told me that only covered with the warranty.

i had an argue on this problem with the nvidia recall but they were ignoring and keep telling me that  i have to pay $500 some thing arround to get fixed that problem.

i fed up with that lenovo laptop now almost all $1500 was wasted to buy this product. which is normally basic laptops will work up to three years with out any problems which is $500 as Toshiba one i have still working.

I am hoping that lenovo will recall this problem to get fix this...

please let me know if any body get fixed by this problem...

Re: T61p graphic card problem

I just realized, that I'm also experiencing this issue.

When I run CUDA application (GPU Load is up to 99% according to GPU-Z) after a while I get error mentioned here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-69684

It really annoyed me, because I need my computer to smoothly handle CUDA computing (I thought it would)

I've got T61 7664 with Quadro NVS 140M. I've got 3 year limited warranty and this is second year I'm using my T61.

What should I do? Ship it to service center? Will my laptop be repaired free of charge?

Is in this case (referecne tip MIGR-72482) possible, that service center will install "serviceable used part" ?

And whole systemboard is replaced or only graphic chip?

But on what grounds can I request systemboard replacement? Service center claims this could be software problem and if lenovo testing tools will not detect any problem service will not replace systemboard. OK it's right but lenovo testing tools are not an oracle and I'm running out of warranty :( what can I do?
