Thermal Pad Thickness

2013-06-10, 0:33 AM

Hello,

Quick question, I have a T61 14 in. and I wanted to know what thickness of the thermal pad that makes contact with the southbridge chip needs to be?

I've tried searching this site and Google for that type of information and it's come up with zero results, considering I noticed the different variety of thickness out there when I was trying to buy one.

Thanks.

I have never seen that number stated anywhere. When I replace the pads, I use 1.5mm

Are you sure you are looking at the south bridge?  Based on various info on this forum, I'd expect thermal paste on the cpu and the bridge and a pad on the gpu.  If it's the GPU, again, info on this forum makes it sound like you need to use a pad or shim on the gpu not just paste.  Can anyone advise as to the consequences of just paste vs shim/pad?

Whoops, just got corrected on this.  I have this backwards apparently.  Pad on the chipset controller.  Paste on the gpu.

I measured the pad from my T61p 6459-CTO at ~1.0mm.  It could be a tiny bit thinner actually (0.9mm) but perhaps that is from compression.

I have a IBM Thinkpad T20 and their stock thermal pad seems to work nicely.  It seems to be 1 to 2 millimeter.  I tried it with just only the paste and it does not work as good as the pad.  So pad goes good.  At least with the CPU anyways.  Good luck with the GPU and other chips since I am not familiar.
