Thinkpad T60 Purchase Questions

2011-11-18, 8:38 AM

Hello everyone,

I been looking at buying my first thinkpad for several years because my grandpa always used them for buisness and now that im 23 I finally broke down and Bought myself a older one. Im pretty big computer nerd so you dont have to take it easy on terms with me.

I do have couple questions related to thinkpad I will be receiving in next few days. From what Ive read this model is PATA based so basically IDE HD's only. Will this config below work?

Transcend 32 GB SSD,Internal (TS32GSSD25-M) For primary HD slot

Also plan on putting Win7 Home premium.

Also from what I gather there is 2nd harddrive bay? Is it also 2.5" PATA slot? Can I use 160gb 7200rpm drive in that one? Any limitations? Is SSD possible? Do I need any special HD Caddys?

My t60 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/230701728811?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Thanks alot sorry for all the questions.

That model T60 has a 32 bit processor, so you'll be limited to only 32bit operating system. All T60 models are limited to 3GB of ram and SATA1 speeds, assuming this model does have SATA which I believe it does.

You probably would have done better with a T61, they are very cheap now and support upto 8GB of ram, all of them have 64bit processors and you can enable SATA2 using a modified bios.

Otherwise it looks like a nice unit. If it has a single 2GB sodimm installed, then you can probably install the 2GB you bought, but only 3GB will be useable, but it's more likely to have two 1GB chips, so one will need to be removed.

As for a second harddrive, as far as I know the only way to add one is in an ultrabay adapter which replaces the optical drive. These will accept an sata drive, but the interface is Pata so you won't get sata speed.

Good luck with your new thinkpad.

As TuuS  pointed out, the main HD in that T50 is SATA, not PATA!  The optical drive seems to be PATA, so maybe that's where the confusion is coming from.

No, my understanding is the T60 systems have a limitation in the chipset that can only use 3GB of ram regardless of the CPU. There are some T61 system boards that will fit in a T60 that will allow upto 8GB, but I'd suggest you enjoy the system with 3GB, use it for what it is. The price is reasonable and it looks like you got the better screen resolution.

ps. They make generic ultrabay harddrive adapters you can buy for under $!5 including shipping. You can get them that support SATA or PATA drives, but the speed fo the drive will be PATA when installed in the ultrabay. It's a nice companion to an SSD, just make sure there is nothing installed on it that the OS needs to run, so if you need to remove it to insert the optical drive, you don't have problems. You can also use a usb optical drive when one is needed if you prefer not to swap ultrabay drives when necessary.
