Thinkpad software

2008-05-01, 17:00 PM
I have just purchased a refurbished T30 (2366-81G), my first laptop, and it has come without a manual and without all software accessed via the 'Thinkpad' button. I have looked on all the support sites and have found pdfs for basic setup and for servicing, but nothing to tell me the basics of using the machine. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a copy of the original software to install on my T30 ?

You may still be able to get a set of T30 recovery CDs for your computer from Lenovo, but they will cost $45.  Recovery CDs for the T4x series will work on a T30 and you may be able to get these cheaper.  What software specifically do you need?

It's not recovery software I'm looking for, it's all the 'Help' files and similar which apparently were accessed with the button marked 'Thinkpad' when the machines were new - all the stuff that would normally be in a printed or CD manual.

gponting - you'll need the factory restore cd set to bring back this functionality.  chances are the disc was wiped of all partitions either by the previous owner or during the refurb process.  The ThinkPad or ThinkVantage buttons access a hidden partition that, if wiped, can only be restored with factory cds... as far as I know.

Bad news, I'm afraid.  Thinkpads don't come with a written manual of any value.  A warranty statement booklet and a quick setup page, but the files you are looking for are on the recovery CDs.  Sounds like you need the T30 recovery CDs.

Good luck.

Try this download, you'll need one or two other drivers / utilities, but that's explained on the site.

Many thanks - that looks as though it's just what I need !!  As the laptop is not web-connected, I've downloaded stuff to my Desktop and will try copying it over and installing it.

Hello,

If you visit the support section of Lenovo's web site and enter the Machine Type  (e.g., 2366-abc) into the web site, you should be able to obtain a list of downloadable software for your T30 notebook.

Thanks to all those who've replied.
I've now found useful information from the links given, decided not to try to reinstall the Thinkpad software, but discovered useful info. about the laptop. Most usefully to me, using it to run Powerpoint on a projector, that you can set Fn+F7 to toggle between having the pic on the laptop only / on the connected projector only / on both. (The firm supplying the refurbished machine assured me that you could not get te picture on both.)
