Upgrade Battery Maximizer

2008-02-24, 17:18 PM
Hi.  I'm new to the forum, so kindly excuse/correct any poor protocol.  I'm trying to upgrade battery maximizer on my five year old T23.  I want to go from V 1.22 to the current V 1.38.  According to the readme, you must first uninstall the old version.  The instructions specify that you can use ThinkPad Software Installer (I have V 1.01.0184) for this purpose.  However, Software Installer does not list battery maximizer as one of the apps for uninstall.  The XP control panel, add remove programs, also does not list battery maximizer.  So, I can't figure out how to get rid of the old version.  I'm reluctant to trying to install V 1.38 prior to uninstalling V 1.22.

Also, the Lenovo site says that Software Installer is no longer in use, that it has been replaced by Lenovo System Update.  I have System Update, updated various components.  But, system update makes no reference to battery maximizer, old or new.

Can anyone help me?  Many thanks.

Hello!

Just out of curiosity - if the current version of Battery maximizer works well on your system now, why would you want to upgrade it? Not having looked at the changeme file, the upgrade may only contain some code changes which probably won't affect your system by installing the new version. I'd be inclined to keep the old version - if it's functioning properly. Just a thought.

Thanks very much for your quick reply.  The reason for upgrading is that quite often my system slows down tremendously, with rundll seeming to be the culprit.  I have researched this extensively and, it appears that others have had this problem and the cause is poor execution of rundll by the old version of battery maximizer.  The threads I have looked at indicate that, once upgraded, the problem goes away.  One other point:  when the slow down occurs, I have finally realized, the battery guage stops updating.  This is another indication that battery maximizer is the problem.

Ah I see now. Seems you've done some research into this problem.

What I'd suggest is for you to download the newer version of the Battery Maximizer directly from Lenovo's Support page for the thinkpad model in question and install it independently of Thinkvantage System Update, thus you'd by-pass it altogether and still achieve the required result.

I would follow your advice, but.... battery maximizer is not a normal app.  I believe it is a dll.  I'm worried about installing the new version, while the old one is still there.  The Lenovo download instructions are quite explicit regarding uninstalling the old version first.  There must be a way for me to do the uninstall.  Thanks, so much!

Hello,

Did you check in the Add and Remove Programs applet (filename: APPWIZ.CPL) in the Control Panel to see if there was an entry to uninstall the Battery Maximizer application?  If so, you could try uninstalling it from there, reboot and install the latest version that you downloaded directly from IBM/Lenovo's support web site.

In that case try reinstalling v1.22 and see if it appears in Add/Remove programs list, then uninstall it from there.  You can probably find the install file in the IBMTOOLS (or similar) directory on your hard drive.

Cheers,
