Vista Update and Speakers...

2013-12-18, 17:58 PM

Hello all, I have just received and updated (from MS) Vista Business and I now find that my speakers do not work. When reverting back to the previous state, they do, which tells me that one of the updates is the challenge. Has anyone else encountered this, if so, what is the fix/patch? TIA - bo1953

I suggest you never allow windows to update any of your hardware drivers especially on a notebook. Get only the drivers certified by the manufacturer. The operating system updates shouldn't cause this so look at what was installed and decline anything that's a driver update or not an important security update. Don't consider all microsoft updates to be helpful, if you allow them they will even install spyware on your system to "help" you confirm you're not a software pirate. If you suspect you might be one, then by all means seek their help, otherwise I see no need to spend time and resources to confirm what you already know (intentional sarcasm).

All kidding aside, security updates are important, most of the rest you can do without so spend the time to read what you allow them to change and in most cases if you get the latest drivers from lenovo, microsoft won't offer you the doggy ones that it thinks might be right for your hardware. Keep in mind that on notebooks the manufactures use components that are similar to other hardware devices but could have significent differences and just because microsoft recognises the chip your audio device uses doesn't mean the driver in their database will work on your laptop.

I could be wrong, but I suspect this is what happened in your situation as I've setup dozens of your model and never had this problem.

Hello,

Have you tried letting Lenovo's own ThinkVantage System Update software perform the driver updates instead of Microsoft Update?  That may install drivers which are a better fit for your system.

Hello all, I have used the Lenovo TV update system without much challenge. The Vista updates are not 'optional' ones, but security updates to Vista which appears to be the challenge.

My next move over the weekend, instead of a wholesale install of these updates, I will do one by one and figure out the one which disables my speakers.

I will let you know which one it is, once determined.

TIA - bo1953

Re: Vista Update and Speakers...

I have gone back to install each update individually and found that 'Secuirty Update for Windows Vista (KB2887069)' is the culprit. There have been a few complaints on the very same issue about speakers yet no real solution advanced.

Has anyone who has experienced this challenge a solution to the problem or a direction in which I should look?
