WiFi Adaptor problems with Windows 8.1

2013-11-14, 16:16 PM

I have a T61 7665-AC2 with an Intel wifi link 4965 adaptor.  Since I installed windows 8.1, the laptop boots with limited internet connectivity.  I have to run the network diagnostics which resets the adaptor and it is fine.  Until the next time I boot the laptop.  I have driver version 13.4.0.139.  Windows says it is the latest one, but I found 14.03 on the Lenovo site...except it isn't for windows 8 and it won't install and says Access is Denied (but I am the admin on the PC).  I tried the Intel site but it says my adaptor is no longer supported.

Any ideas?  Thanks!

Re: WiFi Adaptor problems with Windows 8.1

I found this on the internet and so far it is working for me.

Hi guys, i tried all the above methods but none of them worked for me. However i did find smt that worked, which is to revert your network adapter driver back to an older version instead of the one installed by windows 8.1.

You can do this by going to device manager, right click on your wifi adapter, go to update driver, then "browse my computer for driver software, then"let me pick from a list of...." , check the "show compatible hardware" checkbox and finally select the older version of current driver (if you dont know which, just use trial and error).

When I did this I found 3.  Two from Intel and one from Microsoft.  I picked the older Intel (it was the first one on the list) which was only a few months older than the one already installed.....but it seems to be working.  Give it a try.

Intel 4965AGN is not supported in Windows 8. I have the same issue, except my connectivity is fine but I get random BSOD's involving 'netwlv64.sys'. If you search Google for 'netwlv64.sys windows 8' you'll find tons of people with the same issue. In my case, it's even worse now in 8.1 than it was in Win 8. I've read that some people have had success installing the Vista driver, but also that this creates other (reliability) issues. Your best bet is simply to purchase a new wifi card. I ordered an atheros card from eBay a couple of weeks ago, but haven't received it yet. Note that if you do purchase a new, non Lenovo approved, wifi card, you will first have to install the Middleton BIOS to remove the "Whitelist".

I didn't have any issues with Windows 8.  Just when I went to 8.1  I did install the updated software and drivers from the Intel site today.  I will see if it helps.  And I had no idea I could update the wifi card in the laptop.

Oddly, if I run the Network Troubleshooter if fixes the problem.  It's just a pain.

Jesus Christ!  I never have any issues except a handful on eBay.  However, I just want to chime in and say that if you request a refund it is a hassle on eBay.  However, I give it a 90% that I would buy from eBay as long as the reputation is high.  Even then it is not a guarantee.  So I would recommend keeping your purchases on the low-end side just in case something goes wrong unless you can afford to lose hard working money.  That is unacceptable especially my mom is aging now a days too fast!  So buy in person and get it right there.  Mom always tells me to keep the receipt just in case product is on rare occasion not working out of box!!

Re: WiFi Adaptor problems with Windows 8.1

After upgrading my T61 from Win 8 to 8.1, I started having disconnection issues especially when coming back from sleep mode.

I solved the problem by selecting Maximum Performance in the Power Options->Advanced Settings->Wireless Adapter Settings and unchecking the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" setting in the Power Management tab for the Wireless Adapter in Device Manager. My adapter is the Intel 4965AG.

The wi-fi works flawlessly in 8.1 after the settings change.

Yes, what previous has been said is correct. You will not be able to get decent connectivity using the Intel 3945abg card together with Windows 8.1. Strange enough, it was upload speeds that were minuscule, download was OK.

So I have 4 of them if anybody is interested, as I replaced these cards in the 4 T60's belonging to my family. The Atheros (ATI) cards work fine and can be bought cheaply on Ebay. The replacement is very easy and straightforward, just follow the procedure in the HMM, removing palmrest and keyboard.

I had pretty much tried every driver and every "fix" found on the internet and I was still getting BSOD's related to the Intel 4965agn driver. I just installed an Atheros card I received today so we'll see if that fixes the issue. There's already one benefit, I now get 130mbbs instead of 54mbps. That's because the 'n' speed is somehow locked on the 4964agn and I was only getting 'g' speed.

Re: WiFi Adaptor problems with Windows 8.1

I decided to take your advice and replace the WiFi adaptor.

1. You suggested one on ebay.  Can you point me to the right one?

2. You mentioned I would have to flash the BIOS.  What do I need to do that?

3. Do you know where I can find installation instructions to replace and install the WiFi Adaptor?

Thanks again for all your help!
