Windows 10 on T61

2020-07-11, 16:01 PM

Hi All,

I have a 2007 model T61. I last used it in the year 2010. Today I found it while cleaning the home.

I powered it on. To my surprise, it powered on despite not being used for 10 years.  Speaks about the quality. Hats off to lenovo. (It gets switched off if I remove the power cable. Not sure if the battery is gone or it will take some time to charge. But that's ok. At least its working with the power on)

I am not able to login since I forgot the password. Dont remember the spec of the laptop. ( If I am not wrong the ram is 4g). Planning to format it and install Windows 10 ( Its currently running XP)

Can someone tell if Windows 10 can be installed or if its recommended considering its old.

Thanks

Good day!Your post is serendipitous. ;-)

Last weekend I resurrected a type 7658 T61 (4 gb RAM, Intel integrated gfx) for some dedicated uses. It had been previously upgraded from WinXP to Win7, but had not been powered up/used since 2016.

I backed everything up, and then visited the Win10 upgrade site out of curiosity. And... an hour or so later I had a fully functional Win10 (rev2004) desktop in front of me. Said it was activated via Digital License.

I ran windows update w/o issue, let MS Store do its updates, and then installed Lenovo Vantage. Didn't hold much hope for any kind of driver updates since this really is a legacy machine, so I was not disappointed to be offered none.

Hope this helps a bit!

Cheers.

People do run windows 10 on T61 hardware.  I have no experience so I cannot advise, but I know that if you download windows 10 from microsoft, it will activate free if you have a windows 7 or windows 8.x marker in the BIOS.  I would expect that you have no marker so they may want you to buy a license.
