comparison of two t61p - back me up in my analysis.

2008-03-02, 13:54 PM
Hi all. I'm finally about ready to buy a nice new laptop wich will have to do for the next 5 year. But I need some comforting as it is a lot of money.

There are not really configuration options here (Belgium),  only some preconfigured models. I narrowed my choice to 2 models. There is almost no price difference between those two so I wonder if I am overlooking something.

The same:
T61p, 2GB ram, 160GB 7200rpm, 15,4"WUXGA 256MB, 6 cell, bluetooth, 1GB Intel turbo memory, gigabit ethernet, 3 year carry-in warranty

different:
model 1:
T9300 6460-D8G Top (NH3D8MB), 2.5Ghz, DVD-burner, Vista Business, 4-in-1 cardreader, Wifi a/b/g, (stronger, more protection), 1,653€ (+-2,510$)
model 2
T7700 6460-8YG Top (NH38YMB), 2.4Ghz, double layer DVD-burner, Vista ultimate, Wifi a/b/n, firewire,1,697€ (+-2,577$)

I will add 2 GB for a total of 4GB ram an 3 year on-site support

So far model 1 seems most interesting. It has a slightly better processor (penryn) and the cardreader. I don't really care for the different vista version and hardly burn a dvd or even cd. I also don't have any firewire device so far and no intrest in video editing.

What worries me more is the wifi-card : No N support. Is it possible to install another one if needed? on my own or by lenovo (expensive? missing the extra antenna? ) I'm not planning on upgrading my home equipment soon , but still...

Is the price difference really in the things I see or is the missing firewire and n an indication that it is some strange configuaration to make it look like a "cheap" penryn or something? Overestimating the difference in processor? Any mistakes i'm making? And I can normally add firewire/other wifi also by express card in a few years right?

I'm a developer so i will use programs like VS.net, eclipse, oracle and/or sql server, vmware, virtual pc, apache, IIS. And an occasional game for relaxing :-)
90% home use, 9% other office, 1% on road.

What sums it all up : Will this make me happy for 5 year?

They both have the card reader and firewire, data sheet can be found here. Otherwise the first one has Turbo Memory and for the price difference IMO is the better choice. If it will keep you happy for 5 years probably depends on your software.

I see that you has selected a pro and a medium configuration. I have two , similar configuration and if you can, with windows Vista don't think twice, chosee the T9300 option, I just write a little review comparing the T7300 vs T9300 and the results are clear, the T9300 boost your performance with Windows vista. check the site to find out more about the results that you'll get in each or your selected configurations.

If you have a question, please let me know.
