keyboard and touchpad won't respond

2010-04-07, 12:04 PM

Lenovo  T61 4 gigs of RAM with Windows XP.

Occationally the keyboard and touchpad will not respond.  I've installed all the drivers except for the modem and the biometric co-processor.  If those 2 items are the problem I'll install the drivers.

Any ideas?

Is there a hotkey to disable the keyboard?

Thanks,

cwc

Hello,

Since what you have described could be either a hardware or a software problem, let's try troubleshooting it further to see if you can identify the root cause.  A few questions to help narrow things down:

  1. Are both the TrackPoint and the touchpad disabled when this occurs?
  2. Have you tried running the Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox or the Lenovo Systems ToolBox (formerly PC Doctor) diagnostic on your Lenovo ThinkPad T61 to test the system for problems?
  3. Does the problem occur when you log into your Lenovo ThinkPad T61 with a different account?  What about if you start your Lenovo ThinkPad T61 in Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as soon as it starts?
  4. If it occurs with both types of logins, try removing Microsoft Windows XP from consideration by starting the Lenovo ThinkPad T61 from a Linux Live CD and then using the keyboard and touchpad while logged in to see if the problem occurs?  Likewise, does the problem occur if you just go into the BIOS settings and navigate through them for a while?
  5. Lastly, have you tried removing and reseating the keyboard per the instructions in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your particular model of ThinkPad T61?

Knowing the answers to those questions will help refine (or maybe even solve) the problem.

Regards,
