don't panic, you didn't miss anything important.

On the 3rd of April, (reply date stamp on the mail), your post here duplicated itself somehow so that it appeared twice. It was removed and it seems the forum software recognized it as a reply and has now, somewhat unpuctually, decided you needed to be notified.

Hi, I am not sure if I am still supposed to be getting replies since I received the answer and posted that fact.  I also called out the ones who helped me.

If you are writing to me, thank you anyway.

Sandy

Sandy, if you got an owners manual, or something similar for a The T61 type 7665-AD2 - PLEASE- let me know.  My laptop has been closeted as I do not have the know how to use it.  Some day I will try & open the 60 files recommended & see if i can find a way to cut & paste them into some usable format (usable for somebody NOT having a lot of time to try & make sense of them). I need help, not a llife committment figuring how to use my computer.

I would LOVE to have a printed manual, but apparently it is not available.  I read Windows 7 for Dummies in a day & would do the same with an owners manual.  I think it a real shame that lenovo thiks so little of owners of their products.  The IBM predecessors manuals are still available - I am told.  I wanted a Dell, lbut made the mistake of reading an article of how the Lenovos were so superior (a secret kept by not sharing how to use)  Sure wish I had gone with Dell, they keep manuals available for all their prodlucts.  thanxxxxx

OK...

Since I hate quitting, and because this shouldn't stop you from using a very capable laptop, I'll give it one more shot.

First... please don't obsess about "60 files". As mentioned previously in the thread, .chm files are "compiled html help" files, a proprietary Microsoft format widely used for electronic Help manuals. Since you are able to open the individual files, you are 99% of the way there.

Ready, set, go... :smileyhappy:

1- Please create the shortcut, as described in post #s 18 & 20. The properties sheet of the shortcut should look like:

access-help-01.jpg

and you should then have a shortcut on your desktop like:

access-help-02.jpg

2- Once done, if you double-click the shortcut, you should see the following:

access-help-03.jpg

3- Now, click on the "Show" button in the upper left and you should see (note that the "Show" button changes to "Hide" once clicked):

access-help-04a.jpg

The left sidebar is the table of contents for the entire set of 60 files. No need to worry about clicking individual files anymore. It's all right there, hyperlinked just like a website. Also please notice that there is a "Back" button in the upper left, so you can step backwards through a series of clicks you make. There is also a "Print" button should you find a particular section that you feel you'd like to have as hardcopy.

4- If you click on the "Index" tab (below the three buttons), you should see:

access-help-04b.jpg

You can scroll through the index or type in keywords in the provided search box to narrow the focus.

Does this help you?

Sabrin, thankyou I think this should do it.  This week I am transitioning from my old XP computer to my two "new - to me" W7 computers, a desktop with W7 Home Premium & now will try, again, the Lenovo T61 with W7 Pro, both 64 bit.  I think your step by step instructions should enable me to get an index & arrannge all the .chm files into a valuable source for getting into my T-61.  I can print the few pages that I need handier than a file.  I will lag a few days as I want to follow your instructions on the W7 computers & have a folder on the T61 instead of here on my - being retilred - Xp computer.

I was not able to create the shortcut, but in the help (?access help?) folder previously downloaded exists the file "Aboutintro.chm" exactly as you show, & it works exactly as you describe.  So, thanks to all of you, it appears I have on my desktop the all important index - Yeeeaaaa!  And, I can & will send that link to each of my "new" W7 computers including the T-61.  I should be well on my way to discovering life with a lap top!!!  thanxxxxxxxxx
