simple question: is buying a thinkpad still worth it?

2008-04-07, 3:00 AM
I have a ThinkPad T20. It was an awesome laptop. I'm using it on the past tense because it stopped working today. I'm thinking of buying a new laptop. Are ThinkPads still ok? I have read and heard alot of horror stories and I don't think they're Urban Legends. Are refurbished ThinkPads from IBM website ok too? I really love my old T20. Will I fall in love again with the new generation ThinkPads (T61 or T60)? I need your honest opinion. I need help. Thanks

I have a T9300, and I had T43p, T42, T41, T40. They are still reliable and really good as years ago. The problem with the actual thinkpads, resides in windows Vista. If you really want to get your laptop at all performance as possible, use Windows XP with SP2 or Linux will be better. If you are going to buy or you need some with windows vista, you'll be dissapointed with the results that you are going to get unless you paid for a powerful thinkpad at 2.5 Ghz and 2 MB RAM, it's a must!.
Bear it in mind in your next purchase.

And make it soon as XP will no longer be available from Lenovo after June 30.

Coming to a manufacturer forum asking if they still make a good product will almost always guarantee a yes response.  In this case, there are many of us that are not employed by Lenovo.  Now having said that, I would still completely 100% recommend a Thinkpad.  I hear many complaints about the T61, but I have to tell you...almost every one of them relate to Vista, not the laptop itself.  I had issues with Vista, but have since resolved them, and am now happily typing away on my T61...NO REGRETS!!

Thanks guys for answering my questions. I'm definitely on the hunt for a new laptop. I value your opinions. I just hope that ThinkPads are still the same laptop I know I can rely/depend on.

I thought Microsoft recently relaxed that date.  Also I seem to remember something from the Lenovo web site that made me think XP was available till January.  Ah...this was the XP downgrade data http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=VSTA-DWNGRD

Hi guys. I'm back. I'm now seriously considering buying a T61/T61p. But I think I need your help with the configuration. I also have a few questions:

1. Does it come with an integrated camera? It says on their website that some models do?
2. Does it come with a built-in mic?
3. I saw my boss' T61 and she has a WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050). Can I change it to 1280 x 800?
4. With regard to the video card for the T61p NVIDIA Quadro FX 570, what does "open GL" mean? Why is the 14.1" only has a 128 and the 15.4" has 256 when they have the same kind of video card?
5. Do you think I need the fingerprint reader?
6. Have they fixed the Intel Turbo memory and do I need that?
7. What does a PC Card SLot and Express Card Slot mean? or should I choose the other option? or do I need the Smart Card Slot?
8. Does the WiFi Link 4965 AGN work with any router?

Thanks Guys. Is now the great time to buy? or do you think they would lower their prices? Do you think they have a new model coming out? I really need your help. Sorry about the 20 questions.....
