t61 fan problems

2016-09-29, 11:12 AM

Greetings! My Thinkpad T61 has a small problem with the fan: because I put a thicker grease in it , the laptop only boots after 3 or 4 tries. This is because it beeps once on my first attempt and shuts off so I have to restart. From what I gather, it's a security feature of the original BIOS: it does not start if the fan doesn't reach a certain rpm speed. The laptop is fine otherwise. I wish to know if the unofficial Middleton bios address this issue? What I mean is, will I be able to boot from the first attempt when using Middleton? Thanks!

Thanks for all your help. I can confirm that fortunatelly for my much apreciated T61, it's the fan's fault. After I grease the shaft of the rotor, the fan works for a few days then resumes its usual faulty behaviour. I think I'll look for a new fan though I doubt I'll be able to find a new one. Thanks again!

I can pretty much assure you this is not a bios problem and if you attempt to flash the bios before this problem is corrected, you could destroy the motherboard. If you are getting a fan error, then most likely you need a new fan, but if you are getting beep error codes then you may have an intermintent motherboard failure. If you can tell me the beep code and the motherboard FRU number, or the computer model and/or product ID number and the type of graphics it's equipped with I can probably help you further. The date code that follows the serial number would be helpful, but we aren't allowed to post serial numbers here in the public forum, but if your system is built before August 2008 and has nVidia graphics, it could be a GPU issue.

You rder yourself a new fan (original with heatsink or replacement only fan) over web & replace them. Be sure to put new paste before turning on machine.

Then you'll have no problems with the laptop's fan! ;)
