t61p corde 2 duo t7500 hiss and whine... no solution ?

2008-02-19, 14:48 PM
Hello,

I own, for my work, a lenovo t61p. Cute machine, but it has a very annoying problem : core 2 duo hiss and whine.
The tech support sent me a tech, who came and change the motherboard of the laptop. There is always the same problem.

The tech support, after asking his level 2 support, tells me that there is no solution, but disabling 'cpu power management' in the bios of my laptop. Effectively, doing such a thing makes the noise going out... But my battery life goes away too !!! Almost 30-45 minutes off !

Do you know if there is a solution, or if this (known) problem will be fixed soon ?

Thanks a lot.

Benoit.

every mobile C2D processor makes a high-pitched "electronic" sound when CPU power management is enabled.   this is inherent in the design and the only workaround is to disable CPU power management.   obviously some people are more sensitive to this noise than others.   i can only hear it when in an absolutely quiet room and that's so rare that it hasn't been an issue for me.

Thank you for your answer !

"My" noise is not very high pitched. This noise is much med-pitched than high-pitched.

I have heard core 2 duo hissing on other laptops (other manufacturers like apple or dell), but not as loud as my t61p...

I can hear it even if the room is not very quiet (others desktop computers not very silent)...

I hope this will be fixed on future machines...

which version you have? the standard is 15.4" widescreen. if it's the 14.1 version you shouldn't heard nothing because it's the "quietest" model. Anyway, I hope your computer is in warranty period and you'll send it to check it and repais. The T model is almost the highend option in Lenovo (maybe the X series will be the top for all people) and this things not be accepted to happen. I belive that a solution for replacement exists. It's not normal your issue.

Well sadly this is a general problem which all notebook manufactors have, due to the Intel C2D CPUs. Some manufactors reworked their motherboard southbridges, CPU and chipset BIOS versions etc. in order to eliminate that CPU hiss and whine, but so far -at least to my knowledge- mostly without much success.

To my understanding, the Intel chip makes that sound in reduced power consomption. Try to set your system at high performance. Let us know
X200, 8600, Ram 3G and Win 7...

Yes, if I bring my two cores to 100%, or if I disable power management in the BIOS, the noise reduces...

But disabling power management or set maximum performance reduces my battery life...

So the noise issue is resolved by a battery issue...

unfortunately this is the case with every C2D-powered notebook in the industry.   if you use one in a quiet enough setting then you are likely to hear noise from the processor.   if you turn off power management then you will shorten your battery life.

if you are working in your house then the simple solution is to turn off power management and plug in your a/c adapter.

yes when I work at home, I work on A/C wiht no power management nor battery...

But when I must use my computer in a very quiet place, like a library or a quiet briefing room, I can't plug my computer on a/c...

I don't know if I'm going obsessed by this noise (like laser saber in Star Wars), but this new mainboard seems noisier than the previous...

Really hope this issue will be fixed in newer computers...
