It is not a common problem for Apple at all.

My MacBook and MacBook Pro do not have these issues whatsoever.

I have an early MacBook Pro (1.83GHz Core Duo), and have this "whining" issue.  But, it isn't the processors, it has something to do with the motherboard and chipsets on it.  Processors don't have any moving parts... from what I understand with the issue that that MBP's have is that under certain conditions (idle CPU, go figure), a specific capacitor on the motherboard would vibrate creating a "whining" noise.

I'm looking at a T61p for work now, and I'm sad to hear that there may be some similar issue.

But, for those who have this problem:  Does it occur only when your CPU is completely idle?

As I understand it, you have to go into BIOS, and you have to set your power management features to "Maximum Performance".

I have done this on my T61, and the sound has gone away.

I have a MacBook Pro too, and I have never experienced any noise from it.

Really happy with mine. No noise or humming or buzzing here. Very quiet, I can barely hear the fan too. Very nice machine.

All,

Would you try something else for me?

1) Go into device manager and scroll down to the bottom.
2) Scroll to the bottom and select the + on the Universal Serial Bus Controllers
3) When the list expands, scroll down to the last fix, which should be listed as USB ROOT HUB
4) Double click on the first one, and select the power management tab
5) Make sure the box is checked for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
6) Click ok, and repeat steps 4-5 for each of the other 4 hubs.

Lenovo preload images should have these turned on by default, but OEM versions of the OS may not enable this by default.

As electronic noises can be created by different things, this proceedure may or may not resolve symptoms for everyone on this thread.

Please let us know the outcome here.

As a note, my MacBook (which I just sold because of my new t61) *did* have the cpu whine, but not as a bad.  I never really thought about it too much, as I was working on the AC with the MacBook mostly.

Human hearing goes to about 20khz, but many people can't hear at this range.  For the people who can't hear the cpu whine, I hope you are not using your core 2 duo in a classroom or close together office setting, as there are certainly people who can hear it!

So, I just tried your advice and it seems to have solved the problem.  I have a T61p 14.1 inch screen laptop.

I would hear a high pitched noise coming from the top left of the laptop (near the Escape key) when the AC adapter was NOT plugged in, and I had the computer on maximum power settings.

It sounded like chirping.

Anyway, I followed your advice and the noise has disappeared, so thank you very much.

I was going crazy--I could make the noise go away, but why should I have to pick and choose settings on a brand new laptop so it doesn't put me on lithium??

Thanks again, Mr. Mark_Lenovo
