Yeah, I think the take-away is if you want to do anything unusual, don't rely on intel integrated graphics.  They are purely for mainstream use cases.

Firstly, the Ivy Bridge with HD4000 can support 3 LCD (at least on the thinkpad T430, X230, X230t, T530) without daisy chaining. You just need the Series 3 plus dock. Have 2 external LCD connected to either the DVI or Displayport, then the third LCD can be either internal or connected to laptop's miniDP.
