wireless 802g setup info sought

2008-04-10, 20:17 PM
i just bought a used t41 laptop.my isp is verizon fios. after checking connection speeds at "speakeasy.com" i found noticibly slower speeds on t41 than on my dell desktop..checked with verizon and they said i need to set my nic card settings for 802.11g transmit rate. as a relative novice on technical matters...can someone explain how i can accomplish getting maximum download/upload speed by tweaking the 802.11 g setting in device mgr?
thank you in advance

You need to provide more information.  For a start, its not at all clear what your specific equipment set up is!.

Hi Bill
Not quite sure what info to respond with...but i will try;
Using an IBM T41 laptop running xp pro sp2..1 gb ram- 40 gb hd-802.11a/b/g wireless (MPCI)..isp is Verizon FIO's using Verizon supplied router/modem (wireless) though it is hard wired to my desktop unit (not my IBM laptop)..
Using "speakeasy" to test upload/download speeds I only get approx 15 thousand kbps download speed on the laptop vs approx 20 thou on the desktop..
After speaking to Verizon tech who said to contact IBM re changing wireless settings for 802.11g, which Verizon FIO's needs to work at its optimum speed...I got to device mgr via control panel but do not know how to make the adjustments in the laptop settings.

I hope this is enough of the right info you need to help.
thanks
Barry

Thanks Barry,

Hopefully someone who understands Verzion's WiFi kit will be along to help you before too long.

In general, WiFi real data throughput is often less much less than the raw "link" speed that relevant WiFi standard supports, so what you may be experiencing is just the real limits on WiFi throughput.

I am running on a 30Mbps HFC connection to my ISP and when using 802.11g wirless connection to my router the actual data throughput across the nominal 54Mps link is more like 13Mbps, due to protocol overheads and interference from other nearby WiFi networks, etc.

Cheers,

aol security popup issue on my T61's

2009-06-03, 20:05 PM

I have two T61 laptops, using "AOL" on both systems. T61 systems running windows vista home basic. Also have multiple desktops running vista home premium and using "AOL". On the laptops, when signing on I get a "mcafee" security warning popup on both laptops but not on the desktops. I have searched AOL, Google and Lenovo forums for a way to stop this annoying popup to no avail.

Can anyone please advise a fix to stop the popup ?

Thanking all in advance

Barry

If you're getting 20Mbps on ethernet connection and 15Mbps on wireless you're luckier than most!  A better test of your wireless network performance is to transfer a large file from your notebook to your desktop so that the ISP performance isn't limiting.

Keith

Your answer had nothing to do with my query, I think.

Thanks anyhow

Barry:

If you expect higher than that from 802/11g, it just might.  The 11g standard defines the nominal speed as 54Mbps.  With overhead, interference and distance, 15Mbps is pretty darn good.
