Backup through Rescue Recovery failed after HDD upgrade

Hi,

I have a T60p 8743 CTO with Vista Business. I upgraded 2gb to 4GB and 100GB HDD to 500 GB.

The process I did was, to replace the old HDD with the new one. Used recovery disks to load the vista on to new HDD. Then loaded the latest backup from old HDD. I assumed that I got all the functionality of think vantage tools in new HDD too.

Now, I was planning to load Linux OS. So when I tried to create a back up using rescue and recovery I was not able get it done.

Could you please suggest me if there was a mistake in above procedure. How to troubleshoot the current problem?

Could I make a partition and load Linux with out problem? I need Linux for my research purpose.

I appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely

Yogi

Re: Backup through Rescue Recovery failed after HDD upgrade

it might be when you put the backup on the new HDD the backup also put the backup back on the new HDD so the change in HDD GB might have it messed up you may have to delete the old backups and start over

Re: Backup through Rescue Recovery failed after HDD upgrade

I used a backup I had on DVD to load my 500 GB HDD the DVDs were made on a 120 GB HDD so the disc made the C: partition the same size the rest of my 500 was the recovery partitions. I guess what I'm trying to say is the thinkvantage R&R knew where the backups were when it was on the old HDD but now can't find it

Re: Backup through Rescue Recovery failed after HDD upgrade

Dear GMAC,

My backups are on an external drive. I tried creating backup  on the same and also tried on one more external drive to see the consistency of the problem. It is same on both external drives. So its very unlikely  that when I put latest backup on new HDD, the other backups have also been loaded on to HDD. I will try to back up on to different volume (E: drive) and see if it works.

Thanks for your time.

Regards

Yogi

Re: Backup through Rescue Recovery failed after HDD upgrade

Dear GMAC,

Yes you are correct. RR picked up the backups when I connected my external drive and system is exactly same as it was on 100 GB. Since then I am not able to any backup either on external drive (tried different ones which had old backup file) or on same computer (contains no backup file) and got the message that "backup did not complete successfully"

How to know if RR is working?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

do you have backups on the old internal 100GB HDD & external backups as well? where is the base backup (the very first one) if you have backups on the old internal HDD &  external HDD  like backups 1 & 2 on old internal & then backups 3 & 4 on external HDD. you might try putting the old HDD back in the laptop then use R&R to move them to the external with the others, since R&R backs up in incremements each backup kind of depends (for lack of better word) on the one before it

Re: Backup through Rescue Recovery failed after HDD upgrade

Sorry. No backups on internal 100GB drive. All my backups are on external drives. Currently on my new HDD there are no backups either. Currently I am unable to create anymore backups on anything.
