Fan Error T61

HI:

I have a 18 months T61, I am on vacation and when I try to start my laptop this morning, I got an error at boot that reads:

"Fan Error"

it wont go pass that error.

Is there anything I can do other than replacing the fan?

Is it replacing the fan hard to acomplish?

is this the part I need for a 7658CTO?

Thank you

Mario

Re: Fan Error T61

The fan replacement is not overtly difficult, you could get the part from ebay or IBM parts in USA.

The hardware manual will show you the exact steps involved.

Re: Fan Error T61

A set of screw driver is all you need, also some thermal paste like Arctic Silver.

If you have 3-year warranty take it to the closest IBM/Lenovo service and they will change it for free

Re: Fan Error T61

Hi: I am back with the same issue, I have read some of your posts regarding the "Fan Issue" in the T61 and I am disappointment with the T61 and Lenovo, I have 2 other laptops, HP and MacBook, as old as my T61 and I never had either of them brake down, they never needed service, except upgrading the hard drive and here I am having to replace the Fan not once but twice. First time in April, 2009 and now 2011. I started receiving the ""Fan Error" a month ago and knowing that it had been replaced under warranty 2 years ago, I disregard the message, yesterday, it will not boot, just the "Fan Error" message and 2 beeps. I have read the hardware manual and it is a bit confusing to me how they described the error beeps, so my question is are those 2 errors [beeps and "fan Error"] related? It may seem as a silly question, but if they are not related, I am not sure if I will try to replace the fan. Thank you for all your help. Mario

Re: Fan Error T61

are they short beeps Two short beeps and a blank screen.
1. System board. 2. DIMM.
Fan error.
1. Fan. 2. Thermal grease. 3. System board.
I would say the motherboard is the issue normally with just fan error you can press the esc key & it will boot you can try to reseat the ram to see if the beeps go away but I don't think it will help

Re: Fan Error T61

the probability of the T61 having the fan issue on your system is greater than the other problems. So if you still want to keep the laptop, then just replace the fan with a new one and see what happens.

if that don't fix the issue then take the next step.
