Re: HELP ! WiFi Adapter Card for Thinkpad T42 ?

Restoring factory settings will get you a system with all drivers working (no yellow question marks) including ability to access internet without doing any updates at all.

T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

Re: HELP ! WiFi Adapter Card for Thinkpad T42 ?

zilla, this sounds great, like starting with a clean slate, will this factory restore effect my XP PRO ????

I think when these guys sell these laptops on eBay, they just wipe the HDD clean, then just re-install the OS and let them go with no drivers.

Re: HELP ! WiFi Adapter Card for Thinkpad T42 ?

Well if they wiped the rescue and recovery partition you need the recovery disks from Lenovo support. Just try rebooting pushing the Acess IBM button and see what happens.

The factory install is XP Pro, thats what the machine was shipped with.

On newer machines like my T500 the rescue and recovery partition is visible with its own drive letter. But on the T42 its hidden so not visible in explorer.

IC ... but how about my question. If I try this "rescue & recovery" afterward is this going to require a re-install of XP ?

Re: HELP ! WiFi Adapter Card for Thinkpad T42 ?

No, the restore to factory settings is a complete XP system with all drivers just like when the machine was new. But all the drivers are 4 years old, so is the XP system. I just did a factory reset of my T42 after installing a 250GB hard disk and if i remember right the factory restore did install SP2 for me.

Btw going to the rescue and recovery partition if its still there doesnt start the factory restore. Thats a separate item on the menu once you are there. So you can test if you have the partition without touching your current XP setup.

Re: HELP ! WiFi Adapter Card for Thinkpad T42 ?

Ok, that's great news. I just dont want to make it more unusable than it is right now. I bought this laptop to travel with and have e-mail when I am gone, right now it is almost useless to me because I don't have internet or e-mail. My seller I think operates by drop shipping his products so it took forever to get here. I am not a happy camper because he lives only 200 miles away, and I bought from him for that reason as I was thinking it will only take 2 days to get here. Now I have no time to tinker with it, and we leave tomorrow for China for a month. So I am hoping whatever I need to do to get it up and running I can do on the road. I had already planned to just wait and get the wireless card in China, thats not a big deal, just convenient, but now without wired internet i'm kinda screwed if I don't get it going quickly.

Re: HELP ! WiFi Adapter Card for Thinkpad T42 ?

Well bring the Lenovo support phone list from here with you so you can order the recovery discs if there is no recovery partition. I see that unless you speak mandarin you are going to have to talk to Lenovo support in Hongkong. Smiley Wink

Should I be able to see the recover & restore sector from the "Startup Interrupt Menu " screen ?

No, if pressing the Access IBM button during startup doesnt work you will need the recovery discs.

Re: HELP ! WiFi Adapter Card for Thinkpad T42 ?

I'm in trouble then, because all I am getting is the DOS screen to enter the BIOS, or Boot preference. Like the F2 option on my Desktop.
