I have a T30 whose HDD cratered. I just purchased an FRU replacement. I understand that I need another bootable device to boot up and load the new OS on the replacement HDD. Any ideas on that bootable device? Also, I can't find the Win XP CD's which came with the machine, but do have the product key and serial number. Can I load from any Win XP CD's?
Insert your new HDD into the bay, go into bios and select boot order as CD-ROM first then HDD, insert any Win XP cd into the cd-rom, your boot up should detect the cd-rom and then you are taken through setting up the XP os, format your harddrive and then install win xp. You can use your Product key with any XP cd, but you may need to call Microsoft to get an activation code once you are done, IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads are provided with an OEM installation CD using a volume license key, they are preactivated, once you have installed your software you do not need any further activation.
