Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AG PROBLEMS FOR 2 YEARS NOW!

2010-07-30, 20:54 PM

This has been a problem since day one of purchase and I am about to toss this computer in the trash!  Lost many days of production and probably some vital business because of this.

I have performed yet another complete rescue and recovery clean install and performed all windows vista updates as well as lenovo updates.  Every time the computer is moved just a little bit the wireless drops.  If you unplug the power cord the wireless drops.  Even changing power settings under device manager it still drops.

I have tried to find the information to reseat the adapter but have come up empty.  With the thousands of posts and blogs all over the internet I would think Lenovo would have fixed this problem.  I am in the process of buying another laptop because this one is very unreliable and I have lost valuable time, business and potential customers because of the down time.

I wondered if anyone has swapped wireless adapters with any luck?  If anyone has the schematic to remove/replace/reseat the adapter or a link for that information I would be grateful!  You purchase top end for business with anticipation of few problems.  My old IBM 386 & 486 are still working with no problems!

HELP BEFORE THE SLEDGE HAMMER FALLS!

Thanks

grgsr

Sorry you seem to have been having problems, but it would certainly be helpful if you could post which T series and Operating System you have, even better post the Type and Model Number this will help members to help you. Please do NOT post your s/n.

How to remove the WLAN card can be found in the Hardware Maintainance Manual for your system.

Product is 64577WY

O/S is Windows Vista Ultimate

I am really frustrated.  I believe there is a conflict between the Lenovo Access Point controls and Windows Vista.  I am considering a new laptop as this is frustrating.

I performed a complete Rescue & Recovery and did all Windows and Lenovo Updates............something like over 200 updates...............

Any help would be great!  The wireless Driver is from Intel, driver 13.2.0.30, dated 03/18/2010

Thanks, a T61p - nice.

You say you are using the Intel driver, have you tried using the Lenovo driver? You should scroll down the driver site and check out the "requirements"; this refers to other drivers required to help it work properly. Most important is the power management driver.

Hope this helps.

Yup, I did all that before performing the Rescue & Recovery.  I will try to download the drivers, etc from the Lenovo site again.

They should overwrite when I install them..........

Thanks

Well I tried what you suggested and my wireless keeps dropping.  I had to roll back the driver just to get connected.  I am backing up my files once again.  It took me 4 days to get all of my software and files loaded after the Rescue and Recovery.

Time to play yard frisbee with this or format with XP!

The fact that the T61p has the raised "bump" in the lid doesn't mean it's just as aerodynamic as a frisbee :smileyvery-happy:

There are other considerations which may be causing the drop outs; have a read of this thread, it covers power management issues with a possible solution, (not sure if this is what you refer to in your first post). Power settings can be changed in device manager and the Access Connections advanced settings.

Another factor which I have experienced, admittedly on rare occasions, is the channel the router is sending on; simply changing the channel that the router transmits on has solved this.

Andy:

Thanks for the additional info.  I don't see how changing router channels will stop my laptop from powering off the the wireless adapter.  The wireless adapter keeps powering off and when you hit FN & F5 the adapter doesn't show up as installed when this happens.

It won't even show up in device manager when this happens.  I have to do a complete "shut down" a restart does nothing.  About 60% of the time after a complete shut down the wireless adapter will load when Windows goes through the POST process.

I have performed all of the recommended updates from Lenovo including the power management, access connections, etc. and I still have this problem.

This is totally unreliable and with my line of work as Emergency Management Director and working with Homeland Security, etc. I have vital info that I need access too!

In all honesty I was considering performing a clean install with XP from a CD and not installing the Lenovo thinkvantage software as I honestly believe there is a conflict between Windows and the Thinkvantage software from Lenovo............it's like they are competing for access or something.......just my opinion.......

I am actively looking/researching other laptops as with the liability of my job I can't subject myself to this any longer...........

Thanks:smileyhappy:

Like you comment about the frisbee!

Andy:

I found another thread which I cut and pasted here......interesting............

I had same problem and I was running XP .
I fixed my problem by changing setting on Power manager .
You need to go to Globalsettings on Power manger (you can double click Battery to ge there)Then you need to click on advanced settings .Under Power mangement click so it shows Disable for CPU and PCI Bus . This will not hurt computer but it will keep your computer from shutting off wirelss card to save power .You will need to restart for change to take effect . Also make sure Battery stretch is disabled . Finally
choose maximum performance as scheme name .

Well it's been almost 2 days now and the wireless adapter has not shut down.  I believe the last post I found online about changing the settings in access connections worked..........make your own power plan with the settings it suggested.

I updated with all the lenovo updates including the power plan update and none of them solved the problem.  So far so good..........

Even when I unplug from commercial power to run on the battery the wireless stays up and running..........before it would always shut down and I would have to shut the computer down and restart to see if it would work again..........
