Re: Lenovo T61 screen has gone dark - how to find the right replacement

Here's a picture of my "pea-method with thermal paste" attempt :). I'm going to see if I can perhaps pick up a replacement cpu to see if that's the problem? (since the mboard is new -- I figure it's the next thing to try!)

it MIGHT be the CPU, but that is probably the piece that is least likely to break.  I replaced one last week in a sick all-in-one, but that is only about the 3rd one I've seen over many years and hundreds or thousands of machines.

You say the board is "New".  The T61 came out  more than 10 years ago.  Your picture shows an nVIDIA GPU.  They failed at a great rate., more as they aged.  Are you sure the board is good?

It looks like there may be residue under the thermal paste you applied, the chips and heatsink need to be cleaned first, and since this is a crucial part of the cooling system, you need to get it right so avoid cheap paste. I've been using arctic silver 5 for years and it works exceptionally well in these laptops.

What cpu model do you have, I may be able to send you one

Also, I'm not sure why there is no ram installed in that photo, you did reinstall the ram (I hope)

Lastly, the controller chip should use a grey pad, it doesn't need paste, but the GPU (nvidia) and cpu need a lot of cooling so need paste

RichK, the board is a brand new, sealed in factory IBM box and manufactured in 2012. These boards were manufactured by ibm and shipped to their corporate customers after the bad gpu issue became public. If only lenovo took this issue so serious.

Thanks again for the prompt responses.

1. I used Thermaltake (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/thermaltake-tg-7-0-1-oz-thermal-grease-gray/4407100.p?skuId=4407100&cmp=RMX&extStoreId=537&ref=212&loc=1) as the paste since BestBuy did not have arctic silver.. will drive by MicroCenter later today to see if they might have it in stock :)

2.  WRT> cpu model - I have 2.2 GHz T7500 4M/800..

3.  WRT> ram - I'd read that powering up without the sticks should enable me to hear the beeps (if things worked..   but they didn't :(. I didn't replace the ram.. was using the same sticks from the old motherboard when I was testing.

4.  WRT> controller gray pad - would using thermal paste there be bad.. I don't know if I lost the gray pad.. but will look for it when I get home.

BTW.. WRT> 1. I'm pretty sure I cleaned with isopropyle alcohol .. carefully to make sure the top surfaces were free / clean before I put a pea-sized thermal paste dollop on it.

First of all, don't fret, we will fix this and if it comes to it, you can ship the laptop to me to sort out. Regarding cpu, I have some lesser chips I could send you free (cost of postage only), or if you want the same chip they are pretty cheap and we can discuss that in pm.

I think we all agree this is a new problem since the old board now no longer works, so I would look at things you disassembled and maybe something wasn't properly reassembled. Try removing both drives, the modem and wifi card and see if it will boot. Also, did you do this work away from static electricity?  things like fresh laundry and woven sweaters can destroy electronics with static discharge. I've rarely seen this, but is possible. I would also reccomend pressing the power button ten times with power and battery removed, holding a few seconds each, and 30 seconds on the last. This will drain the capicitors and can clear some errors.

Thanks for the help! Not fretting - it's fun debugging :) just ordered a replacement cpu off of eBay to try next.

Yes it does appear to be a new problem, wish I could tell what it was :) have double checked all the connections etc and nothing loose or missing or extra!

BTW don't know if this is relevant but when the cpu shuts down .. I'm pretty sure the hdd keeps spinning and I *think* the heat sink fan is spinning a tad longer than it used to before it shuts down (but I may be imagining that)..

The fan spinning makes me go back to the thermal paste issue. If you don't have a good connection between the chip and the heat sink with the right amount of thermal paste it's going to overheat and shut down

Re: Lenovo T61 screen has gone dark - how to find the right replacement

1 Hmm it heats up and shuts down in a few seconds? Is that possible?

2 Will try with Arctic silver next as you suggested. Is there anything particular I should be doing to make sure it's on correctly? There are a few videos re paste application which is where I got the pea suggestion.

3 Could there be a short in the keyboard or elsewhere that could cause this? (Grasping for straws :)

4 One thing I noticed: the heat sink screws on to a piece of metal (that is a pentagon on the other side of the motherboard screwed in with a single screw). Two of the screws are with the metal bars that are fairly secure and go over the GPU and controller. Of the other two I notice I only have one screw .. the connections seem pretty secure and solid but I wonder if I need to really tighten these and have all four screws in?

Thanks again for all your help!
