Love my T43s, and wonder if there are any recent laptops that come close...?

2016-05-22, 22:38 PM

Hello!

I love my T43s and want to bring my computing a little closer to the 21st century. Modding them to be able to upgrade to Windows 7, 32 bit seems to be an option no longer, as the online chap who use to do the mods no longer performs them (at least as far as I could find).

Among much of what I love about these machines are their:

* Solid construction

* Anti-glare screen

* Clarity of view even when viewed off-axis

* Aspect ratio (widescreen is great for movies, but for the internet...?)

If anyone has any ideas on more recent machines (Windows 7, 32 OS) that come even close to having these characteristics, I would truly appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks!

Ralph

Hello,

There are lots of models to choose from, from ThinkPad's ultra-light X-series, to the T460/s/p and T560 models which are the immediate descendents of your T43 to the P-series workstations.  I think all ThinkPads these days are pretty solid, and anti-glare screens are standard (a few of the tablet-centric models might have glossy screens) but it really comes down to more what your use case it, and how heavy a computer you want to move around.

I have been using T series ever since the T20 and was relectant to move to widescreen too and so when it was time to change my T43 I found a T60 with standard screen. However I needed something with more powerful graphics so within a few months bought a T61p with 1920x1600 display. I hated using the T60 after that! Since then I have only ever bought thinkpad workstations for the same reason you mention - I do not like losing the height on the display. If your on a budget, the T500 or W500 (minimum of 1680x1050 pixels with ATI graphics) would be a superb upgrade from your T43 and you will not lose screen height, but do gain width. They run windows 7 and Windows 10 superbly. If you can afford a bit more go for a T510 with i7 (first generation) and 1gb Nvidia graphics.

If you are thinking new, look for a minimum screen size of 1920x1080 and I guarantee you will not be disapointed after using your T43. The T460p with Nvidia graphics for example looks like a nice buy

Thank you for such a detailed and considerate reply!

I will look into your suggested machines and see what pops up.

Take care!
