Old Thinkpad 560x has various problems

An old computer I have, used, with problems:

1. Loose power cable (if you bump the power cable the computer turns off)

2. Cannot change resolution or color settings (Any settings that require a restart don't work.) I adjust the settings then it asks me to restart, then it turns back on and appears exactly the same. If I exit the window it doesn't even remember that I changed the settings.

Info:
The computer is running Windows 98 and has a non-functional battery and I think the CMOS battery doesn't work because the computer asks me the time when I turn it on

Re: Old Thinkpad 560x has various problems

1. Have you checked if this isn't a loose power connector?

2. I remember this issue from one of older devices. I'm not 100% sure (that was about 20 years ago), but it seems it was caused by dead CMOS battery. Try to replace it.

Have you tried the original drivers? (Which you can download from here: click me!)

These Drivers seem useful, but I don’t know how to install them on the thinkpad. I have nothing that can transfer data from my computer to the thinkpad. I cannot find a floppy drive that connects to the computer.

Re: Old Thinkpad 560x has various problems

You will need to get either a:

  • USB drive, if possible try to get an old USB 1.1 drive, otherwise a USB 2.0
  • External floppy
  • External PCMCIA CD drive

In worst case scenario you will need to remove the hardrive, put it in an IDE to USB enclosure, copy the files there from another computer, reinstall the hard drive in the 560x and run the files from there.

Keep this old ThinkPads working is fun, but you need additional hardware as mentioned above or a lot of patience Smiley Wink
