Partitioning a hard drive on T61 or similar system with RnR intended to retain

Author:              dominic0315

Language:         EN-GB

Purpose:           Partition a hard drive on an IBM T61 or similar system with Rescue and Recovery which intended to retain

Scope:              Preparations, procedures for the purpose

Remarks

1.         Author has no responsibility for any mistake made in this article.

2.         Author has no legal responsibility for system failure once reader tried the method below.

Acronyms and Definitions

AHCI                 Advanced Host Controller Interface

HDD                 Hard Disk Drive

MBR                 Master Boot Record

MRK                 MBR Repair Kit (provided by IBM)

PE                    Preinstallation Environemnt

RnRPE             Rescue and Recovery Preinstallation Environment

TVT                  ThinkVantage Technology

WVPE              Windows Vista Preinstallation Environment

Considerations

1.         HDD with RnRPE would be eliminated upon partition with partitioning tools (i.e. Windows Installation Disk)

2.         Recover the system with CD/DVD RnR would reallocate partitions, simply undo partitioning.

2.         HDD is not accessible with Windows Installation Disk (XP or lower) or even Live CDs due to AHCI mode on T61 or equivalents

Important Notes

1.         Users using computer out of effect of AHCI mode can skip procedures dealing with AHCI mode without losing the generality of logical procurement for partition HDD.

2.         RnR Rescue Media and Recovery Disc are prepare for emergency, if and only if, operations failed or procurement logically not established or manual input errors or user giving up clumsy operations and intend to returning to original states.

3.         All data would be vanished in the partitioning, recovering of system.

Preparations

*1.        Rescue Media

*2.        Recovery Disc

3.         WVPE

^4.        MRK

*1 AND *2         Can be created by "Create Recovery Disc" Utility in TVT at the same time!

The 1st disc created by such utility is a Rescue Media, 2nd and so on are Recovery Discs.

3.                     Step 1

                                    Download Windows Automated Installation Kit

                                    (Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C7D4BC6D-15F3-4284-9123-679830D629F2&displa...)

Have WAIK ready accords to instructions below on download page.

                        Step 2

Prepare Windows PE image (you may skip all customisation procedures on the below link if the disc is not required for other operations)

(Link: http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsVista/en/library/88f80cb7-d44f-47f7-a10d-e23dd53bc3fa1033.mspx?..., Windows Vista Deployment Step by Step Guide)

^4                     MRK can be downloaded from lenovo.com for 2 situations

Situation 1 - Computer WITH floppy disc drive

                                    (Link: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-54483)

Situation 2 - Computer WITHOUT floppy disc drive

                                    (Link: ftp://ftp.boulder.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/thinkvantage_en/rnr31_rrd.iso)

For the above situations, have your programme extracted or burn on either a floppy disc or CD. Both .iso and .exe extracts or burns identical programmes for the repair task.
