Refurb. T60 without any Lenovo software - what to download?

2014-06-05, 17:32 PM

I recently purchased a refurbished T60 type 1951, 14.1" screen Thinkpad. It came with Windows 7 Home Edition (for refurbished computers) preinstalled.

It did not, however, come with any of the Lenovo software suites installed, such as ThinkVantage. So that blue button does nothing (except enter BIOS on startup), I cannot alter functionality of the trackpoint or use the middle button, and the volume buttons next to it also do nothing. Not knowing what other Thinkpad drivers and software it was missing, I searched around some threads as well as the Lenovo drivers/software page, but didn't see anything conclusive. I'm not sure what exactly should be installed, and the Lenovo Support page has so many drivers thrown about, when I was really looking for a driver/software suite for a one-off install. Or even a CD that I could order.

I did install Lenovo System Update (v5.06.0007), hoping it would install the bulk of what I was missing. It installed:

-Thinkpad Hotkey Features v3.87

-Thinkpad UltraNav Utility v2.13

-Win 7 Update Module KB2661796

-Win 7 Update Module KB2397190

The weird thing with the Lenovo System Update is it opens up halfway off screen, to the right. The volume buttons work, but that is also sized odd, with the right speaker icon and portion of the volume bar clipped, and the whole graphic is positioned off-center to the right. UltraNav works but I haven't changed settings yet.

I'm still missing the ThinkVantage suite though, and couldn't find a definitive download from the Lenovo support page. I realize they dropped the software for LSC, but LSC is not supported on this ThinkPad model, so I would need whatever Lenovo software suite originally installed on this model.

Can anyone help point me in the direction of the correct downloads, or maybe where I can find a CD with all the software/drivers on it, to be updated after install? I have yet to contact Lenovo or verify whether my 3-yr refurbished warranty would apply to a Lenovo support ticket, if needed. Thanks.

The Hotkeys update also seems to conflict with Windows. If I use the volume buttons to try and max out the volume, and click on the taskbar's volume icon, it will show only 50%. If I move the volume icon's slider to put volume to 100%, then the keyboard buttons seem to be able to turn it down incrementally from 100%, but not back up past 50%. The brightness hotkeys also have the same issue with the on screen graphic being clipped at the right, but it at least will go to full brightness, verified by the brightness slider in the battery profile page.

Hello.

Which version of the System Update utility are you using?

The ThinkVantage programs are not a suite, but a collection of different programs. You only install those you require.

I recommend sticking to an earlier version of the Hotkey Integration for the older ThinkPads, i.e. T400 and older. That eliminates all issues the later versions display on these machines.

Hotkey Features Integration v. 3.81.0100

Additionally, you might want to install the Active Protection, Power Manager and the Fingerprint Software (if your machine has the Fingerprint Reader).

Here is the driver matrix for the T60's for additional downloads.

ThinkPad T60 Driver Matrix

ThinkPad P1 - i7-8750H/32GB // ThinkPad P70 - Xeon E3-1505M/64GB
ThinkPad W540 (20BG) - i7-4800MQ/32GB // ThinkPad W520 (4282-W4Q) - i7-2720QM/32GB
ThinkPad T450s (20BW) - i7-5600U/12GB // Yoga 900 - i7-6500U/8GB
ThinkPad T61 (7665-CTO) - T7700/4GB // ThinkPad T60p (8741-C2G) - T7400/4GB

This helped me too

System Update v5.06.0007

Thanks for the rolled back hotkeys driver. The setup allowed me a few options for
installing/updating drivers/apps. All but the System Interface Driver were given a nominal update, with the auto scroll and patch utility being completely absent prior to the install. Results:

Lenovo Auto Scroll Utility v1.11

Lenovo Patch Utility v1.0.1.1

Lenovo System Interface Driver v1.05

On Screen Display 6.62.01

Thinkpad FullScreen Magnifier v2.40

The graphics for volume and contrast control are now displayed correctly. The volume levels of the keyboard keys and toolbar speaker icon work independently of each other. Meaning, if one is at 100, and the other and 50, sound plays at 50, but muting one mutes both. Not sure if this is just how it works, but I can deal with it. At least they are displayed correctly.

I'll take another look at everything listed on the drivers page. I was hoping they'd have a bulk installation for cases like mine, or upon fresh installations of Windows on, say, a new HDD.

Thanks for the help. Hope I can find more to expand the functionality. One that I am looking for on a really well put together Thinkpad (I think also a T60 but widescreen) had an amazing wifi utility. Not sure if it was third party though.

The ThinkPad Hotkey Features Integration Setup from the rolled back Hotkeys driver lists the Patch Utility as current (v1.01.1), but after rerunning Lenovo System Update, it shows v1.03 and says, if installed, will make the latest version 1.4.0.4 available.

System Update also shows the newer Hotkeys driver (3.87), so maybe the patch utility update is only concurrent with the hotkeys update?

Yes, the System Update utility will inform you of the latest Hotkey package available, but you can click the arrow besides the listed update and select Do Not Show This Update if you don't want it to appear again. Updating the Patch Utility seperately is fine.

You can safely update everything in the Hotkey package with the latest versions, except for the On Screen Display feature, but you have to do it manually if you wish to do so. The System Update installation will update everything and break the OSD again.

The WiFi utility you mention is probably the ThinkVantage Access Connections, latest package for your machine here:

ThinkPad W540 (20BG) - i7-4800MQ/32GB // ThinkPad W520 (4282-W4Q) - i7-2720QM/32GB
ThinkPad T450s (20BW) - i7-5600U/12GB // Yoga 900 - i7-6500U/8GB
ThinkPad T61 (7665-CTO) - T7700/4GB // ThinkPad T60p (8741-C2G) - T7400/4GB
