Self diagnose T61 noise: fan or mechanical drive?

Attention Moderator: I just realized I post in the incorrect forum. Will you kindly move this to the T6-... forum?

I've generally found the Lenovo tools relatively useless. So here's a few questions:

1. Recommendation for a though machine analyzer with reasonably accurate/useful diagnostic suggestions?

2. If it's the drive, will a current 256GB SSD plug and play in the same location as the current drive?

2a. Given age of the T61 would there be a system board or memory generation conflict with an SSD?

2b. The T61's updater crapped out some time back...something like no longer supported. How would I go about determining if I needed to upgrade the BIOS for the SSD and then do so absent the updater?

2c. Even if the problem was the fan and not the drive, I would likely install the SSD so 2, 2a, 2b would still apply.

3. If it's the fan, is the ease of replacement similar to that of the drive?

The SSD should work fine.

Crystal Disk  info will itell you if the disk is failing.

The fan is not too hard on that model but harder than the drive.
