T42 Power button will not turn laptop on

Hi all,

New to the forums, was wondering  if anybody has had or heard of this problem?

I have a T42 that the only way you can turn it on is by plugging in the power supply, as soon as I plug it in the laptop turns on. The power button will turn it off but wont turn it on. I have tried the reset procedure, also tried it with out battery, no difference. The laptop will go into standby and out with no problems with or with out the power supply plugged in. Power supply tests good and battery holds charge.  Do I need a motherboard? Thanks for your time

Re: T42 Power button will not turn laptop on

Welcome to the forum!

Looks like it is time for another keyboard. The problem is with the power on button itself. Sometimes the power button will either stick badly or lose connection to the systemboard. If your unit is still in warranty, call tech support to replace the keyboard. This will solve the problem.

Cheers,

Mark

Re: T42 Power button will not turn laptop on

you can try to wash the power button with pure isopropyl alcohol to see whether that can remove any gunks that is causing the problem.

Re: T42 Power button will not turn laptop on

Thanks for the welcome,

I was thinking that might be the problem, so I removed the keyboard and plugged in the power supply and the laptop turned on again. I assume that if the keyboard isn't plugged in, that isn't the problem? Sorry, I left that out of my first post: I'll try the cleaning anyway. Thanks again for the welcome and the quick responses.

Re: T42 Power button will not turn laptop on

this should mean the problem is somewhere on the laptop's motherboard itself.

Re: T42 Power button will not turn laptop on

I would seriously consider replacing the keyboard first before trying the systemboard. If your unit is under warranty, call tech support to get a trouble ticket opened. Hope everything works out for you.

Cheers,

Mark

Re: T42 Power button will not turn laptop on

Do you have access to, can you borrow, some flavour of port replicator or dock? They also have a power on button which would enable you, when docked, to turn the system on. This would also help with the problem diagnosis.

Hello everybody,

Tried the dock, same problem. Think it's safe to say that the keyboard isn't the problem??
