T42 failure of many or all of the ports on the left side

2009-02-19, 21:59 PM

This system has worked well up until a few weeks ago, then suddenly many of the ports on the left side (USB, Ethernet, phones) have failed. I haven't tried the mic or the modem. The PCMCIA slots work. As well, the system could not recognize what video adapter it had, although it works with the default driver.

Does anyone have any ideas on the problem and fix?

your southboard chip on your motherboard could be detaching, but i haven't see many ethernet and phone ports that fails too. akjula66 knows bit more on this issue than i do. If it is indeed the southbridge chip that is causing grief, then you could try a solder reflow or a second hand motherboard change. Or time for a second hand or new upgrade to a new laptop.

Thanks for the rapid reply. I am new to the "notebook repair game". I am competent with machine disassembly and with a soldering iron but have no idea where I might find a used motherboard for the T42. I am located in Toronto, Canada. Can you give me some hints as to where I might search for the part?
