I bought my ThinkPad T42 five years ago. I have upgraded the hard drive twice. My current HDD is a Hitachi 80GB slim IDE. Lenovo offers only a 100GB drive. To go from 80GB to 100GB is not worth it. What is the largest drive I can get that will not give me any problem? Is it the Western Digital 320GB PATA? Or is that asking for trouble? http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=599

That drive will work just fine...pretty good price here:
Hope this helps.

Thank you, George. And thank you for the link to purchase the HDD. I am in Canada (Toronto), and it is easier from me to buy it in a store here for a few dollars more.

Daniel, I`d recommend NCIX in Vancouver. They ship quickly and the cost of shipping is partly defrayed by the lack of PST. Here`s the same drive from them. If you don`t want to wait, I`ve had excellent service from CTY in Richmond Hill. There are many small PC stores in the RH and Markham areas so you may be able to find the same or similar drive a bit cheaper. (e.g. Canada Computers.)

Thank you, hausman, for your suggestion on where to buy the HDD. I find that http://www.canadacomputers.com/ is very reliable and their prices are quite competitive. This 320 GB drive is the same price with them as with NCIX ($112). Plus being able to walk in the store to pick up the item or to return if it is defective is a bonus!
