Yes it is possible. Follow the manual listed in the following link.
But if you don't know much about LCD, i suggest you get the listed LCD parts.

I received the following responce from IBM South Africa,
Unfortunately we don't downgrade/upgrade LCD panels/Planars/CPU's of
machines as there is no way we can keep track of it. Also when it comes to
the LCD panels, the graphics card plays a major role in the type of panel
in there, and thus interchanging panels most likely won't work. The LCD
cable is also a factor as different screes sizes uses different cables.
I quess there is some risk involved and that IBM/South Africa is also unsure.
Any ideas ?

Thank you for the reply, but I do not want to upgrade, but downgrade.
I have also emailed laptopscreen1.com and the replied with the following:
Unfortunately it is not possible to upgrade nor downgrade the resolution of your panel as applications and hardware specifications wouldn’t be compatible.
So I am a bit confused, my logic tells me that If I Could Upgrade, then I could downgrade as well.
Can you please re look at what I am asking, specifically If I buy a panel on Ebay, will that be the only part that will be required. ( I currently have a X1400 Card + 1680x1050 display)
and I want this ( X1400 card 1280x800).
