T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

I have a T71 (7658 03U) Chipset GM965 with XP Pro SP3 installed. I need to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro. I have 3 GB of RAM and it looks like I have a 32 bit version of XP installed. How do I move to Windows 7 pro and can I install the 64 bit version of Win 7 Pro? Ran the Windows 7 Advisor but it is not real clear on drivers. Also thought I saw in this forum that my machine could run 8GB of RAM. Please advise on how to successfully migrate to Windows 7 Pro. Thank you.

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

Welcome to the forum!

While a T61 will take 8GB of RAM, you need a 64-bit OS in order to utilize more than 3GB.

Clean install is the only approach I'd recommend and T61 is fully supported in the W7 environment.

Happy upgrading.

Cheers,

George

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

Actually there are 32bit windows versions that support large amounts of ram, far more than any notebook could ever hold, but they aren't normally available to the general public. I have a copy of windows server 2003 (32bit) installed on my T61 with 8gb of ram. This os is based on the same windows XP but with memory remapping technology so it can ultilize large amounts of ram however there are significant advantages to using a 64bit OS and all T61 models are capable of running a 64bit windows version. I've installed 64bit Vista and Windows Seven on several T61 units and they run both versions very well. Many users also report that windows 8 runs well on a T61, although it's not officially supported and does have some minor issues reported. In my opinion I would recommend Vista or Seven, both will run very nice on a T61 with upto 8gb of ram. The 64bit version of XP had some problems when it first released and although most if not all those bugs have long been resolved, you may still find issues with some hardware and software as this OS was never popular enough to be fully accepted by the related insustries. My advice would be to avoid it.

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

Thank you all... Conversion accomplished and only minor glitches. Like importing the Outlook PST.

System runs much faster under Win7 Pro 64 bit. I only have one last thing to figure out - and that is how do I expand the 3 gig of ram I have installed and move to the 8 gig of RAM I understand may now be possible.

Smiley Happy Great, quick and reliable resposnes here. Again Thank You.

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

You have two ram slots, if you have 3gb installed that means you have 1 (1gb) and 1 (2gb) module. You can install any amount upto 8gb using modules of 512mb (0.5gb), 1gb, 2gb and 4gb. The ram you want is DDR2 PC2-5300 sodimm 667mhz. You can usually get away with pc2-6400, 800mhz ram, it's not the speed that the board is designed to run but it usually works fine running at the slower speed. The ram is available here at the following (approx) prices (respectively) $1, $7, $22, $80. Prices will vary, this is only to give you a general idea.

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

Just spoke to Crucial and they say the T61, even with a 64 bit Win7 Pro OS...as tested is 4GB. So apparently, unless you know another rerliable source... 4 GB is all the T61 could handle.

Oh well, I had high hopes. I work on Excel spread sheetes to 2 million cells deep and have over 300,000 formulas operating. It works fine, is optimized, I was just trying to sqeeze more performance via more RAM.

Some uf us have been running 8GB On these machines for years now...

Cheers,

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

I just need to know the type and source for the RAM. Crucial says they do not have the RAM that would fit into my T61. I believe you ... the picture would be nice, I just need to find a source for the RAM that would work and be found by the motherboard. Thanks for the extra effort. Smiley Happy

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

Source? Try feebay.

Any good name brand (Hynix, Samsung, Micron, Elpida, Mushkin) in either PC2-6400 or PC2-5300 (which are also known as DDR2-800MHz and DDR2-667 MHz respectively) 200-pin laptop RAM will work.

I never use "no-name" RAM in any of my ThinkPads, and advise against use of "value ram" offerings from various manufacturers as well.

Expect to pay $130 or so for a matched pair totaling 8GB DDR2.

Cheers,

George

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

What is the sorce for the RAM? Crucial says they do not have RAM that the T61 will support. I do want to find at least one 4 gig stick to take the machine to 6 gig. --

You had stated: "The ram you want is DDR2 PC2-5300 sodimm 667mhz. You can usually get away with pc2-6400, 800mhz ram, it's not the speed that the board is designed to run but it usually works fine running at the slower speed."

I just need to find a source for the 4 GIG RAM that will work and be recoginized by the BIOS. Please advise.
