Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

What is the sorce for the RAM? Crucial says they do not have RAM that the T61 will support. I do want to find at least one 4 gig stick to take the machine to 6 gig. --

You had stated: "The ram you want is DDR2 PC2-5300 sodimm 667mhz. You can usually get away with pc2-6400, 800mhz ram, it's not the speed that the board is designed to run but it usually works fine running at the slower speed."

I just need to find a source for the 4 GIG RAM that will work and be recoginized by the BIOS. Please advise.

See e.g. Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory Model ... from Newegg. They want $200 for a pair of SODIMMs. That seems a bit pricey for such a relatively old system. Note that at least one reviewer has installed this RAM in a T61p. Newegg has slower PC2-5300 Crucial SODIMM RAM that's actually even more expensive.

I would think you could get similar DDR2 5300/6400 SODIMM RAM for less on eBay et al. I wouldn't worry too much about matching SODIMMs since the performance degradation will be minimal. In this context size matters a lot more than speed Smiley Wink

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

The person you spoke to at crucial doesn't know what they are talking about. I've used 8gb of ram manufactured by crucial in my T61's several times.

I've also used ram manufactured by Patriot, kingston, etc.

However I think Georges price estimate is a bit low, you could get 8gb for $130 several months ago but today a major brand will be more like $160 or more.

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

I have the same Machine type... Question the Lenovo site can never find this machine type. 03U it never finds. Any thoughts on that? Reason being is cause I want to update the BIOS and I see a very new one actually and I did not expect to see that and it mentions IEEE1394 which this laptop does not have.

Re: T61 (7658 03U) Upgrading to Windows 7 pro

I bought a T61 with Win 7 already in place on a new HD. same thing, 3 GB MB. I found some 4 GB on ebay for $48, works fine. Hynix? 6 GB so far.

Sorry for the belated response. I wouldn't worry about the 03U sub-model or that the BIOS update mentions hardware (IEEE1394) that your system lacks. A more important issue is what does this BIOS update do? Unless there are fixes or updates that apply to your situation I wouldn't bother with the update. I presume your T61 is working fine now. If so there's no need to "fix" that.
