I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional on my Lenovo T61 yesterday. I allowed Microsoft Update to upgrade drivers, and as far as I can tell, things are working.
However, in Device Manager there are two problems.
Under Other devices
Base System Device
Base System Device
Properties for the first one show:
Device type: Other devices
Manufacgturer: Unknown
Location: PCI bus 21, device 0, function 4
Device status: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)
Properties for the first second show:
Device type: Other devices
Manufacgturer: Unknown
Location: PCI bus 21, device 0, function 3
Device status: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)
I've looked through the forum and there doesn't seem to be a definitive solution for Windows 7.
Some helpers havve pointed to a missing Ricoh driver, but under PCMCIA in Device Manager, it shows:
Ricoh R/RL/5C476 (II) or Compatible Cardbus Controller,
and under IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers Device Manager shows:
Ricoh xD-Picture Card Controller
and under IEEE1394 Bus host controllers Device Manager shows:
Ricoh 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller
If anyone has found this problem, and has a solution, it would be most welcome.

Go to your control panel and pick Devices and Printers.
Right click on your laptop and choose Troubleshoot
Select Appy This Fix
Select View Solution and then click on Download Driver from Lenovo Group
Run it and it will install some files to C:\Drivers\Win\4IN1
Go back to Control Panel and choose Device Manager
Right click the Base System Device and choose Update Driver
Choose to Browse through my computer
For me one of them was the SDMMCx64 and the other was MSx64 since I'm running the 64 bit version of Win 7

Thanks johnuf78.
I followed your procedures and it fixed one of the two Base System Device problems, but not the other. With you help, I'm halfway home!
So, I repeated the procedures again, this time focusing on the second Base System Device. The troubleshooter downloaded the same files (I allowed it to overwrite), but this didn't seem to solve the problem. I'm restarting the computer and will give it another go...
Nope. I followed your procedures one more time, and still have one problem. It says it's the card reader, which I believe it also reported for the first Base System Device. The driver installer reports that it can't find the correct file.
The remaining problem is the "function 3" device. When I try running update driver from Device Manager, it says it is Ricoh SD/MMC Host Controller. The update reports:
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
Ricoh SD/MMC Host Controller
The system cannot find the file specified.
Any other ideas? And, thanks again for taking your time to help.

Hi,
these might help you. I installed the Ricoh driver off this list and it fixed both the Base drivers

Chris,
That did it. I downloaded the zip file (7kss55ww.zip) and extracted it.
First I tried the troubleshooter way to fix it, but that didn't work. It seemed to load the same old driver.
Then I went into Device Manager, and tried Update driver software, and that too didn't work.
Finally, I looked at the unzipped folder and saw a Setup.exe file that I ran. It asked me to reboot when it was finished, and now I no longer have any problems within Device Manager. Of course, I've never used the card reader, so don't know if it actually works, but at least I no longer have errors reporting.
Thanks for the help. I hope this short thread helps other users.
I want to add that, so far, I am very pleased with the upgrade from Vista Business to Win7 Pro (64). The computer seems more responsive, boots up much faster, doesn't keep pestering me with various popups that came with preinstalled software, and it looks better! Nice work MS.

I performed a clean install of Windows 7 (64bit) on a T61p (646067U) and I used the Lenovo system update tool. I have one device manager alert: "driver not installed on Base System Device. reinstall driver". I have no clue what the device is or how to find the driver. I have rerun the system update tool several time. I thought it might be the 4 in 1 card reader but that is working fine. Any suggestions?
