T61- Blue Screen - - reporting unmountable boot volume

Hi,

I recently updated my T61 with the usual updates, but accidentally unpluged my computer before the updates were complete.  My computer was running on AC adapter alone because my battery was dead.  Now I have a new battery and when I turn my computer on it tells me that it was not shut down properly, but windows will be starting.  The start screen for windows XP shows up and after a few mins. the blue screen pops up and says something about unmountable boot volume.  I don't want to recover/resart my computer because I will lose data.  Can anyone help with this problem?

Thanks!!!!

Re: T61- Blue Screen - - reporting unmountable boot volume

Hi, welcome to this forum. Sorry to hear about your trouble.

On boot up push F1 to get into the bios and see if the harddrive is recognized. If it is try booting in the safe mode by pushing F8 and see what happens.

Don't know what else to say at this moment.

Re: T61- Blue Screen - - reporting unmountable boot volume

I tried your advice and started my computer in safe mode.  Once I clicked safe mode a list of codes scrolled up my screen.  All of the beginnings of the codes were the same:    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows/system32    the rest had a different word or two at the end.  This stayed on my screen for a min or two, then my computer tried to restart again ant the blue screen would pop up.   Any other suggestions?

Re: T61- Blue Screen - - reporting unmountable boot volume

Last time I saw that was when the MBR was corrupted. This is what worked with XP.

1. Boot pc using cd/dvd

2. Select repair console

3. Type FIXMRB

4. Type FIXBOOT (not sure if this is needed in your case)

5. Remove cd/dvd and boot pc.

Hope this helps.

Re: T61- Blue Screen - - reporting unmountable boot volume

Thanks for your help, but could you use a little more plain english.  I am not that knowledgable about fixing computers.

Also will this cause me to lose any data?

Re: T61- Blue Screen - - reporting unmountable boot volume

No this process should not lose your data. If you can boot your machine from CD or otherwise you might be able to access the hard drive and transfer your data to a flash drive. I'll look for a better explanation on getting your machine to boot. Unless someone here might help with that.
