Oh man, i got the same issue yesterday. I thought it might just be the weather (20+ days of over 30C) and started to look for new laptops.
What really sucks is that the build date is on the laptop show 07/08, so close to not having a defective laptop ![]()
Ill be trying the following from eecon. Fingers crossed.
Edit: Just called them and i have to leave my name and number for them to call me ![]()
"
Make sure to politely and exactly say the following words before you say anything else to the customer service rep:
Hello ..... I understand from reading recent news reports on Lenovo support forums and other web blogs that Lenovo has now agreed to honor it's world-wide committment to high quality customer service by repairing defective T61/T61p units containing Nvidia discrete graphics built before August 1, 2008 in accordance with Lenovo's MIGR-75087 internal support document at no charge, even though they may be beyond the warranty period. I would very much appreciate your help in resolving my issue.
Then pause and let the CS Rep respond .... If they say that they can not find the MIGR, ask them to please escalate to a Support Department rep so that they can pull up the MIGR because it is not available to the public (and often the CS Rep also can not access it .... especially outside the U.S. and Canada). MIGR-75087 has been intentionally pulled from public access ..... only Lenovo Support and it's authorized repair contractors have access to it."

same .... First of all, welcome to the Forum.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news about the "closeness" of your build date to Lenovo's implentation of the fixed GPU units during assembly ...... Lenovo listed by the build date with year first, then month so you actually have an August 2007 (not a July 2008 as you initially thought). A 08/07 would not necessarily be a bad thing because that was the transition month in 2008 (July 2008, shown as 08/07) which may or may not have the defecive Nvidia GPU (i.e. a 50/50 chance of being a good one is my guess for July 2008 (08/07) built units.
Your's definately has the defective Nvidia GPU ..... just keep after them by calling every few days ...... how far past warranty are you?

Well
At least Lenovo wont be arguing that it may have been fixed.
Warranty, I bought it second hand so I dont think it transfers ( does it? ). When i bought it the lenovo toolbox showed it had extended warranty ( that message sai it was expired maybe mid last year) .
Ill call on monday and see how I go.

Warranty automatically transfers with the machine regardless of the owner ..... go the Lenovo Support webpage and look-up your warranty status by entering your machine type and S/N (it's all explained on the Lenovo Support website step-by-step and the info to be entered is found on the bottom of your unit).

Looks like your unit may meet the criterial required by MIGR-75087:
1. Build date before July 31, 2008
2. Less than 6 months past warranty expiration
3. Unit exhibits a single long beep followed by two short beeps upon power-up followed by a blank screen?
Does your unit do item 3?

Thank you for the help, it seems to be going well so far.
I called up lenovo and was then referred to IBM for the service. I didnt quite keep to the script and at first he advised that the laptop was out of warranty and there was nothing he could do.
I then read out "Lenovo has now agreed to honor it's world-wide committment to high quality customer service by repairing defective T61/T61p units containing Nvidia discrete graphics built before August 1, 2008 in accordance with Lenovo's MIGR-75087 internal support document at no charge, even though they may be beyond the warranty period."
He listened then check the MIGR number, he was taking a while so i read out"can not find the MIGR, ask them to please escalate to a Support Department rep so that they can pull up the MIGR because it is not available to the public (and often the CS Rep also can not access it .... especially outside the U.S. and Canada). MIGR-75087 has been intentionally pulled from public access"
He popped me on hold and checked. After that he said he had found it and I explained the issues. After that he asked for some photos to confirm the behaviour (I took them last night). Last night I sent them to him ( he emailed me a reference number and asked for me to return the email with the photos) and this morning at 7.30 called and confirmed that it would be fixed under warranty due to MIGR-75087 ![]()
The courier arrived from DHL to pick up the laptop this afternoon, fingers crossed it all comes back fixed next week ![]()

Dear Moderators:
Please consider same's post here for some kind of highlighting for quick reference in the coming months as I'm sure more and more owners of these units will be visiting our Forum for the 1st time with similar questions and that can be answered by following the procedure and scripted wording that same used.
Here is the direct link to same's adjacent postings announcing success of the procedure and scripted wording to use when contacting Lenovo CS:

Same: BTW, Good Work .... congratulations!

Well , i can say is claimable here in singapore. Too bad my warranty expired more than 6 month. Dont know why they makes such regulation. My friend having his macbook replaced with more than 1 year expired warranty. well just my bad luck then my t61 should be faulty during the warranty period or at least after the 6th month expired warranty. life goes on. congratz for all of you that been replaced.

kaede ..... Have you tried calling Customer Service yet?
There are reports that Lenovo is starting to waive the the "6 month past warranty" requirement as the snowball of failures now gets larger and larger as this issue continues to roll down the mountain.
