T61 cannot boot

My T61 cannot boot up yesterday. After power up. The screen shows up 6 thinkpad logos instead of one. Then all windows show the windows logo then a blue screen. I changed to a new disk but still the same problem. It looks it is bios or graphic card issue but not sure. Thinkvanatage 6 hard disk tests failed 4. But my problem is even with new disk it still gives me multiply start windows. Thanks

Re: T61 cannot boot

I'd say if you have an nVidia system then you have a typical gpu failure. If you have Intel graphics then you have a very unusual failure, but a failure nonetheless and the only solution is to replace the system board.

Re: T61 cannot boot

Hey ilikeibm,

Can you get to the desktop? Are your errors just on the loading screen and with the logos?

Best Regards,

Hiro

Re: T61 cannot boot

Thanks everyone, I will get the number tomorrow. I left machine at work.

Hiro. I cannot get to windows login menu. I can get to the windows logo page then a blue screen asking me to check for virus or disk terminated incorretly. At first I thought it is hard disk issue so I ran hard disk tests and it failed few test. So I put a new disk but I still get six thinkpad logos and complains that it cannot find a boot disk. I plug in the recovery CD but still cannot boot. I can try a linux cd to bypass bios but dont have time yet. My another T420 at work is also having problems. How good are IBM machines?

Re: T61 cannot boot

hi.

you should edit your post to remove your s/n.

i tried looking up your machine on the waranty status/parts lookup site, but it's being cranky right now. best i can tell from other sources is that you do have the infamous nvidia monster, as Tuus posted above. if that's the case, there's no legitimate fix other than replacing the planar.

i'll try the lookup page again later to try to confirm.

Re: T61 cannot boot

Lenovo's database often has problems with CTO systems unfortunately, but what we can tell is your system was made in 2007, long before August 2008 when the nVidia problems were resolved.

Re: T61 cannot boot

Hey ilikeibm,

Lenovo doesn't sell motherboards from the web site and any board you buy will have to be through a third party vendor.

Here is a link to another forum that talked about getting a replacement board.

Best Regards,

Hiro
