I have a T61 and the 15.4" display changes to a solid grey color about 5 seconds after the display is restarted. Cannot see anything but grey on the display after this, so it is unusable. Closing and opening the laptop will cycle this again. An external display works fine. PC Doctor reports no errors and the display driver has been updated.
Any ideas on if this is a display, adaptor, or other concern?
Thanks for any help.

I haven't seen this exact problem, but swapping a known good display will tell you where the problem is. What screen does your unit have?

the "lines" sound like it could be a graphics processor, a common problem if you have nVidia graphics, but this usually presents on external monitors as well.
You might have a bad inverter, but I wouldn't be to quick to rule out a possible system board problem. If you had a known good system you could borrow the lid from, it would quickly tell you if the problem is in the systemboard, or the lid.

My daughter has a t61 I could borrow the "lid" from but am a little concerned about the chance of causing a problem in her computer, she is in college and needs it daily. Is the lid swap easy?

If they are the same class machine, the swap will work. It's pretty easy to do as long as you don't mind tiny screws.
4 screws to remove palmrest
1 screw keyboard
8 screws upper keyboard bezel
2screws left speaker
4 screws lid
Unplug LCD cable and 2or3 antenna leads and you can swap screens, confirm it works and reassemble her laptop.
If you both have 15.4" widescreen (for example), they are interchagable. A 14.1 screen won't fit a 15.4 frame. If her schooling depends on the laptop, you might think about buying a spare. They are pretty cheap now.
