Re: T61 locking up

As richk mentioned above, the most likely cause of your lock-ups is the nVidia GPU failing/failed.

Re: T61 locking up

Even with it being the new fixed model  2010, after all the problems with the original??   This was surposed to be 'good to go'.

Re: T61 locking up

Is it an original late-date planar, or one that you sourced from a third party?

Re: T61 locking up

IIRC there are even some later-date planars that suffered GPU failure.

From what I've read here and elsewhere, the only way to know if a particular GPU is truly safe is to stress test it.

In my personal experience, there are maybe three people I trust regarding this issue. I have a safe T61p purchased from a member who is no longer active in the community. Another member, @TuuS, has been active here, and might be able to offer further advice.

Regards.

Re: T61 locking up

Hi, after reading this thread, here are my opinions.

1st, yout date 08/10 is not aug 2010, rather 2008 October...  but that is a good date, meaning as long as it's the original board, it should be as reliable as any gpu. The defective chips were used in 2007 until july 2008, although failure rates dropped after feb 2008 as they began improving quality control at nVidia, but wasn't till 08/08 when all stocks of boards were replaced, but this searies was cancelled at the end of august, but some special order systems were built as late as october.

However, locking up without graphic artifacts or graphic driver crashes is not how a failed gpu usually presents. My guess would be software problems. One easy way to tell would be to boot the laptop from a linux live CD, and if it doesn't lockup using linux, then I'd wipe the drive and reinstall windows. If you need a windows disc I can provide one for a nominal donation, amount of your choice to cover cost, postage and time involved.

Hopefully your board isn't the problem, but if it is, I can help with that too.

Re: T61 locking up

I didn't lock up in Safe Mood, so that is 'software problem' ?   I d/l a USB with Win 7 Pro 64.  Have not tried that yet.   set BIOS for USB and boot up?    (never tried a USB boot before).   Reloading a PC is not a problem, retired people have time on their hands.

Re: T61 locking up

very possible it's software, but in safe-mode it uses the gpu cards legacy support for generic graphics drivers, so linux would be a better test, and can be done without changing the harddrive, or without having one installed. One good source would be Ubuntu.com, but if you don't mind the work and losing data then a fresh windows install will answer the same question, as long as you don't install a faulty driver, which could duplicate the problen on the new os, but if you stick with the older Lenovo approved drivers, that would be best, untill you confirm it's stable, then update only one at a time.

usb boot drives don't always work, I'd reccomend using your optical drive.
