T61 stopped during normal use

2013-08-30, 15:58 PM

My T61 got locked during normal use and I had to press the power button to force it to power off. After that when I try to power on again nothing appears in the screen . I can see that the LEDs of the HD are blinking, Bluetooth is also "on", but no message or sound.

If I press any switch in the keyboard for long time the buffer gets full and It emits a beep sound, so looks like something is working.

Also, I can not access BIOS during the start-up.

Does anyone can help to solve this problem?

Thank you in advance!

If it has nVidia graphics it could be a failed gpu chip. You can also try shining a flashlight at the screen and see if you can see a faint image which would indicate a lesser problem.

I've seen many people complaining about GPU problem with the T61 and their problem is very similar to the one I'm having now. So, it think in my case is GPU too and looks like there is no way to solve it :(

I've helped dozens of members solve the problem, you'd need a board that isn't affected with this problem. They are rare but can be obtained. If you'd like me to check what is available you can send me a PM and we can discuss it. I also have a test you can do that may help to confirm if it's actually the gpu

I can vouch for TuuS, I got a good T61 board from him, works great.

Hi TuuS. I would be nice to know how can I make sure it is really the gpu problem. Can you please send the instructions about how to test it?

No, you need a working gpu for it to boot. Sometimes you can get a partially working gpu to boot using the vga adapter with an external monitor.

I connected an external monitor but the result was the same, no image.

I read something about the VPRO centrino processor that would give access to the computer even without power it on. I'm not sure how it works, but maybe it is a way to get in to the system, maybe disable the gpu and use the regular VGA video.
