T61 won't start up

Hey,

my mom's old trusty T61 probably gave up but I am just trying to find out if its really KO.

Laptop won't start, the power cord LED lights up when I connect the charger but stops when I press the power button. Tried different charger, running without battery, the "10 times power button" trick and reseting BIOS.

Nothing.

Most people day its motherboard. Any other tricks I can try before throwing it out ?

Thanks,

Zbynek

Re: T61 won't start up

If it's an nVidia model you may have a failed gpu which can easily and permnantly be fixed by converting to an Intel motherboard, or a late model nVidia board although they are more costly.

Many who use a t61 wouldn't trade it for a new model, but if you don't have any special love for this computer then replacing it is an option.

As for tests to confirm, there is a way to temp revive many failed gpu chips, but I don't like to post this info because so many of our members have been scammed buying laptops or boards that have had similar acts to revive them, but if you want to message me privately and you're willing to partially disassemble your laptop, I can tell you a way to be more certain it's the gpu, however the existance of the nVidia chip and the unit production date would be enough for me to be 99% certain.

Re: T61 won't start up

Hey, thanks for the reply but I already replaced it. With prices of T420 nowadays it was easy decision. But the "HW guy" of mine says its indeed motherboard that would have to be replaced.

Re: T61 won't start up

My personal opinion is I'd never trade a T61 for a T420. I might consider a T410 as they still had the 16:10 aspect ratio, the T420 uses 16:9 like most newer laptops which is a direct fit for HD video, but horrible for doing real work because of the decreased verticle realestate. Ideally the 4:3 aspect T61 would be best, or even better the 15" T60 retrofitted with a T61 motherboard which offers the IPS flexview screens that were discontinued at the end of the T60 line. The newer models just don't compare IMO.

ps. I actually had a T420 and couldn't wait to get rid of it. I got a T410 instead and liked it, but still rarely used it, so reveted back to my T61 models...  however not everyone has the same likes/dislikes so opinions will vary, but most thinkpad fans agree the T61 was the last of the great classic thinkpad line.
