Thinkpad G41

I have a Thinkpad G41, about 9 years ago just after a year and a half of ownership the screen went blank, it started beeping and would not boot up, would not do anything, nothing on the screen.  Every time I plugged it in the power light would come on, it would beep, fan would come on, beeps told me motherboard was bad.  I replaced the motherboard with a capatable unit about 6 years ago but it did basically the same thing, just a different set of beeps which also indicated motherboard was bad, I switched out graphics cards and made no real difference.  It still would not boot up or put anything on the screen.  I gave up for a while but recently got a motherboard of Ebay for cheap that was a exact match, I installed it but it still will not boot up or put anything on the screen, screen is always totally blank, it does not beep anymore but the fan goes on full speed as soon as I plug it in or put a charged battery in it, when I hit the power button and hold it the fan goes off and the light goes off but when I let the button go the power light goes back on and the fan starts blowing again at full speed, I can feel something moving by the lower keyboard area but still nothing on the screen.  I just don't understand.  I tried taking out the memory, no difference.  Could it be anything else?  CPU, Hard drive, etc.  Is there any test I can do to verify what is going on and why it won't boot up or put anything on the screen.

It is a older XP machine with a Pent 4 prosessor but I would still like it for a spare laptop and to get it working becuase it was so expensive.  I am not paying hudreds of dollars to some place to just take guesses on a outdated machine until they find out what is wrong, the places/techs I have taken it to don't seem to have any clue how to even diagnose or fix it other then suggesting paying them a lot of money so they can replace expensive parts until they find out what is wrong.  I can replace parts pretty cheaply now.

Re: Thinkpad G41

Welcome to the forum!

Maybe the screen is defective? Or the LCD cable? Have you tried connecting an external monitor thru the VGA port?

Re: Thinkpad G41

[ Edited ]

I have not tested it for a bad screen or LCD cable.  I guess I can try it, you just hook any computer monitor into it and try booting it up?  I would not think it would just start beeping if it was a bad screen and I would notice it going before it went.  Don't know why the cable would fail either but who knows.

I took the hard drive out and changed memory chips, no difference.  I don't know if it was another bad motherboard I put in or maybe graphics card.

I am going to try another CPU next as soon as I find a cheap one, I read where a CPU can have the same symptons but they rarely fail.

Other then that I don't know what else, maybe power supply unit, I have tried and changed just about everything that has to do with booting it up.

This was my original thread with a little more info, forgot I posted here before.

I just tried plugging a computer screen into my G41 and it said no input signal on the computer screen when I plugged it in, no difference.

Sounds like a dead replacement mobo... Did the seller confirm it as in working condition?

Re: Thinkpad G41

I emailed them and asked and informed the computer still does not boot up, but they never bothered emailing me back.  It was really cheap, I think it was around 16 and that might have included shipping.  It said it was a working mobo in the description for whatever that is worth.  I figured a dead mobo would send out some beeps, this time there were no beeps, power is going somewhere on the mobo because the green light lights up when plugged in, the fan goes on, the lights goes on for both disk drives.

Re: Thinkpad G41

Does it come with a CMOS battery? If yes try removing it and leave it disconnected for around 15 minutes. Then reconnect and try to boot again.

Re: Thinkpad G41

Is that the small circular watch type battery near the memory chips?  What what that do taking the battery out and putting it back in?  Would I lose anything if I took the battery out?

It's indeed a small circular battery, mostly covered in a yellow plastic (sometimes in black). Only thing it will loose is the date/time settings and some bios settings, which you can all restore again after pluggin the battery back

Re: Thinkpad G41

I removed a small silver circular watch like battery between the memory chips for 15min and then tried to boot back up.  It made no difference.  Same results.

Re: Thinkpad G41

Difficult to asses, but it seems more likely like a dead mobo...  :-(
