Thinkpad T20 Rescue & recovery doesn't work! Help!!

Ok, So, I have a problem, I need to do a reinstall of XP on a T20 but, heres the deal!!  There are files on this machine that can't be delete because they r pictures.  I would boot into windows & pull the pics & things off but, I had the computer join my workgroup and it came from a domain and can no longer log in

so, Is there a way I can do a  Rescue & recovery without formating the drive & keep the data?  I thought there was?  I try to press F11 to get into the  Rescue & recovery utility and nothing happens.  It boots into the XP OS.  Is there a different key to get in this tool on the T20?

Thanks

Re: Thinkpad T20 Rescue & recovery doesn't work! Help!!

Welcome to the forum!

A couple of things here:

a) No T20 ever has left the factory with XP on it, so whatever version you're running is unlikely to have a recovery partition needed for the R&R to operate.

b) I don't have a T20 anywhere close to  check it out myself, but I doubt that it even offers a F11 option in BIOS, or does it?

Chances are, you'll have to do a fresh install from scratch.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

George

Re: Thinkpad T20 Rescue & recovery doesn't work! Help!!

This T20 has XP pro on it, When I was able to log in, I looked at the system properties and there was no IBM logo!!  Don't know if that tells you anything.

Also when I was able to log in I saw a 2nd HDD listed in my computer

I called tech support and they told me if I press F11 that'd bring up the restore but, it did not work!!  Help please!!  Can't Log in!!!

Thanks

When you go into My Computer, is one of the drives labelled "IBM Preload" ?

Good luck and let us know.

George

Re: Thinkpad T20 Rescue & recovery doesn't work! Help!!

OK...can you

a) Get into BIOS and see whether F11 function is enabled (it should be in the Startup section)

b) Get into Safe Mode by pressing F8 while booting

Good luck and let us know.

Cheers,

George

Re: Thinkpad T20 Rescue & recovery doesn't work! Help!!

If you do get into the restore partition and run a recovery you will still lose your pics.

You might be able to boot into safe mode, maybe as administrator and access your files.

If not I would grab a live linux cd such as Puppy or Ubuntu and boot to it and save your files off to a USB drive. Puppy Linux will allow you to take the cd out and use your CDRW (if you have one) to burn files to a cd.
